Delay before turn on xenon?

Featured Replies

Hello guys.

Every morning I drive in or out of my garage with the light switch on auto - the xenon turns on or off for just 20 sec before I turn off the car - is it possible to delay that?

Easy, switch it off auto before entering garage, switch back to auto once out of garage.

I presume you are going into or out of reduced light? Sounds like its Just the light sensor doing its job. AFAIK you can increase reduce / increase light sensitivity by VCDS. It wouldn't bother me really but maybe you have a specific reason for it. I have dipped lights on most of the time as I find the light sensor predicable in fog or dusk conditions.

If you want to alter the lengh of time the lights are on it looks like this can be done via MAXI-DOX

I don't think it's the Coming Home/ Leaving Home lights the OP is referring to. It appears to be his headlights are switching on when he puts his car in the garage as it is dark, ( lights selected to auto). Also when he starts car in garage, lights come on till car out of garage then lights switch off, that's the way I read it anyway.

Ahh... my mistake :)

Mine come on when I unlock the car, and go off when I open the door if I remember correct... then come back on once the ignition is put on... If light enough they go off again once outside.

My Seat Exeo did the same :)

Exactly, I know the light sensor is only doing its job - but maybe I could delay it in 20 sec or set the threshold a bit lower....

Those quick on/off cycles are deadly for xenon lights. With Vagcom you can only make the lightsensor act quicker (setting is for 20/40/60% earlier, not later) So to prevent your problem, you're going to have to manipulate the switch.

Unrelated, you can set coming/leaving home to the fog lights instead of xenons using Vagcom. In my mind this is also function over form, as in the foglights light up the ground around the car preventing you from giving your shoes a bath in a muddy puddle. The xenons might outshine the foglights but the foglights are better in close.

Sounds like you have two options...

1) Turn the switch from 'Auto' to '0'.

2) Leave them in Auto and avoid running into the kids toys on the garage floor!

That is not correct, the setting is just not as well known (or easy to find) as many others, but it is described in the Ross-Tech wiki. With VCDS I have changed the sensitivity of my light sensor twice already.

The sensitivity is held in byte 01 of address 09-02.

My original value was HEX 2B, which equals 43%. I changed this first to HEX 0A, which is 10%. However, after some weeks of tests, I found that the lights went on too late, so I changed it again, this time to HEX 19 (25%). No I'm satisfied with the result.

Remember, before making the Xenons turn on later, please have a dealer (or someone with VCP) change your rear lights to the always-on setting, to prevent dangerous situations!

And as always with VCDS: Try at your own risk!

Why would you want the rear lights to come on before the bi-xenon's?

If you change the light sensor's sensitivity in such a way that your Xenons turn on much later (only when you (almost) need the light on the road, to see where you're going, and not just to be seen by other motorists), your rear lights are turned on too late. On the front of the car this is no problem, since there are always the DRL's.

For my rear lights I would like to have a separate switch setting. But this setting is not there, so I've had my dealer change them to the always-on setting, which was my safest option. Unfortunately, changing this setting can not be done with VCDS. You need VCP or the dealer to do this.

Andrehj - what is the percent settings of? If i do a read out on the actual value on the light sensor, it says 7.0 I've programmed the threscold to 05 - just to see what happens - but the xenon still turns on?

I've never read out the value of the light sensor, so I do not know which values you should expect there. But when setting the byte 01 I mentioned in my post to 05, your Xenon should turn on only at a very low light level, but I do not know how low (and you do not mention at which light level you tested).
