Steam and slight burning smell from rear of engine...

Featured Replies

I recently had my wastegate actuator changed following the good old P0299 error code...All seems to be well boostwise now, but a new issue has occured.

I notice an odd burning smell, not eau de clutch, something a little less intrusive...When I arrived home from work a couple of days after the job was done I noticed a bit of steam/smoke coming from the grille and when I opened the bonnet I discovered that it was coming from the rear of the engine bay, from what I could see anyway. I've not seen any weird temperature readings or anything like that...But obviously it's a bit of a concern. Do you think the mechanics could've disturbed a gasket or something while changing the actuator?

Check your coolant level, it may be coolant leaking out onto a hot bit of the engine and turning to steam.

Possibly when changing parts something was spilled and now burning off.?

Or the engine was cleaned before they repaired it and the residue is burning/steaming off,

Eagle eye on all the levels. Water down, oil up etc.

Sounds as if you have gone a reasonable distance since the job, so unlikely to be split water? How far have you travelled?

A torch and a mirror may help you see something. Try cold first. Then again after a run, but be careful with getting snagged, burnt or anything trapped.

Old hoses often don't like being disturbed.

Sensible thing is to take it back and get the garage to have a close look.

I'd guess I've probably done about 100 miles since it was done now...Levels of coolant are fine, I'll check the oil tonight.

I've got a stupidly busy week so won't be able to get it booked it to be looked over until next week I don't think :-(

So I got a low oil light as I pulled into the car park at work this morning...That's not a great sign right?
