Steering wheel removal

Featured Replies

Guys.... How do u go about getting steering wheel and air bag off

Was told

Turn wheel sideways ( 90 degrees )

Disconnect battery , for how long before hand ?

Then u use screw drivers to open clips on back ?

Is it then 2 plugs and a big nut ?

That's it mate, usually a small screw driver/ pick does the job nicely. Then 2 small plugs and larger torques bolt. VAG always suggest bolt everything back on/all plugs then put earth back on last with nobody in the car in case any air bag issues you wont get hurt etc.

instead of a small screwdrivew use an allen 4mm or a tx30,works better

Yeah im going :)

Watch some videos on youtube.  I struggled to remove mine until I watched a video to work out which way I needed to flick the retaining spring clips

Unplug battery for 30 mins first ideally - get rid of any residual current. You can do this without disconnecting the battery if you're careful but it's a freaking airbag and i'd always err on the side of caution :)

Once you have the wheel in the right position use your tool (I went with an old drill bit) and by feel you should be able to get at the clip. You want to insert it so that the end that sticks out of the hole is pointing slightly downwards towards the floor of the car. Tug the tool ( :D) upwards and it'll unclip.

Pic shows the airbag removed, you can see the little sprung clips that need to be unclipped if that helps visualise it.

Lol, well, if it's me doing it, surely I will need the crash helmet...

My spare helmet is for use on track, not for airbags going off. :P
