Dpf becoming blocked

Featured Replies

Hey guys.

I recently went through my PD170's first regen experience. It regen'd the first time fine(or so I thought) but a few days later, the dpf light came on again, followed by heater plug light(and limp mode) and then the engine light.

Took it to my local skoda dealer, and ended up replacing a sensor in the dpf, force regen'd it, and she was perfect for about 4 days before she lit up with those 3 lights again.

Took it back to them again, and they scanned it again, found no fault other than the dpf was full(95%) forced a regen and it's back running smooth again.

They advised me that the problem could lie with the swirl flaps in the intake manifold. They couldnt tell me why or how exactly its causing it to block the dpf, but because they noted a pipe that should be going to the swirl flap motor was blocked off.

Is it possible for the swirl flaps to affect the dpf like that? Or is skoda just lookin for an excuse to start adding up the bill?

Also, any time I regen'd it myself, I followed the instructions in the manual.

Any advice or info will be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi,

Could you please state what you mean by "I followed the instructions in the manual. " - what exactly did you do?

The instructions in the manual explain how to drive to aid the car to regen itself.

Once the DPF light is joined by the EML and glowplug light the car drops into limp home mode and driving the car won't allow for a regen, it is a dealer only visit.

You should be looking at at least a few days or few thousand miles with the DPF light on before the others come on.

Who has modified the pipe to the swirl flap motor? Did the dealer remove it or fix it?

I can't see how the swirl flaps or EGR could affect the DPF.

What I did is exactly what the manual says:

"in order to clean the diesel particle filter, the vehicle should be driven at an even speed of at least 60km/h at engine speeds of 1800-2500 rpm for at least 15 minutes or until the warning light goes out with the 4th or 5th gear engaged when the traffic situation permits it."

The pipe was disconnected before I bought it. Only noticed it a few days after buying the car as it was tucked in under more pipes. I never felt that it affected the performance of the car though. I was wondering the same as to how the swirl flaps could affect the dpf.

Now the other possible problem is that I got the head replaced by a reputable indy Vag specialist about a month ago. It was a second hand head, but it was checked, pressure tested, and had a few valves replaced. Could there be an existing problem within the head that a pressure test wouldn't show? It was just the head replaced, no ancillary's.
