Over 600 miles on a tank in the VRS - no wonder engine of the year again

Featured Replies

Ideal conditions, not in a rush, up from Worcester to Glasgow yesterday and back to Worcester today on a single tank  (610 miles) !!

Yes I did vent fill the tank, probably had just over 50 litres in the tank, was not in a rush, oftern only doing 50 mph through the road works and 55-60 mphs when on the phone yabbering about work stuff but still, wow.

Computer showed an average of 55 mpg and I still had 15 miles range shown on the computer.

Yes there was a bit of coasting down the long hills in the borders and Cumbria but also some 80 mph bits too to find some clear space etc.

78K miles on th clock and still impressive performance acceleration and economy and still struggling to think what to replace it with?

Remarkable!

After 5,000 miles I never get better than 40 MPG and I am not an agressive driver - perhaps my figure will get better with time.

Generally 97 RON fuel, occasionally 99; 95 only if I can't get anything better.

That's incredible, very impressive :-)

That is remarkable. I have not manged more than 400 from a tank yet, but I do a lot of short trips as I live close to work. I always get impressive MPG on long runs, so I reckon I could get more from a tank on a long journey.

600 miles from 50 ltrs is c.54mpg. Very impressive.

I can get a Twincharger to do 53 mpg with it actually doing 53 miles or better on each gallon,

but that is pretty much at keeping to 2,400 - 3,400 rpm. But that is still at or above the UK NSL's

& i can do 60 mpg plus with a indicated 63.2 MPG over 60 miles at around 50 mph in cooler weather.

But boredom has never had me get more than 520 miles from 10 gallons in a tank being used and checked with a refil. (under 46 litres)

But that does still show a 40 or 50 miles range, so i could maybe get 570 miles or so.

450 - 480 miles out of a tank when not driving like 'Miss Daisy' is with me just confirms how efficient a Twincharger can be.

Long runs with an indicated average of 32-37 MPG usually means it was a fun drive.

& under 30 mpg, down to say 22 mpg, means i keep waiting for something to drop through the door.

you need to use 98 octane or better to get the best fuel consumption.   I use Tescos Momentum and occasional Vpower.

the first 3 or 4 miles are always at around 25-30 mpg so only on long journeys is this start up poor mpg marginalized to such a degree to make it relatively negligible.

I don't even get 600 out of my diesel! So well done!

To be fair it is only when these particular set of circumstances arise ie super long journey ie 305 miles one way followed by 305 miles return, not being in a hurry ie spending much time in the sweet spot of around 60 mph, not meeting any appreciable traffic issues and venting the tank to get that extra gallon or so in.

Will generally try and squeeze in the extra 5 litres when I am going on a long journey right away so I pay the cheaper Tescos price and get my Tesco points.

Did nearly 400 miles today and only got around 90 miles of fuel left so not as good as earlier in the week, did not vent the tank to get the extra in and kept up higher speeds when I could but also crawled on M25 for quite a bit.

Shame Skoda is not getting some of the new good engines for a while ie the cylinder de-activation models so still in a quandry as to what to replace the Fabia VRS with now it has almost 80K miles on it an in the land of MOTs.

Bang for buck still near the top of the pile ie less than £100 per hp.  Chevy Camaro sounds nice before the leave the UK for good ie less than £30K for 400 hp even though 30 mpg is not to attractive and company would not like that CO2 or fuel cost on the fuel card!

Well done on that.I've broken the 400 mile barrier and still got some in the tank. I put in near £70 of fuel (97-99) in and got 14p off per litre and worked out to be £58 for 45 litres, so I am happy with mpg.

Ant

I used to be able to get more than 50 mpg, before I put the track day tyres on! lol.... it'll get better when I change to 205/45/16 winters! ;)

good effort OP :)

I got 439.2 miles to 45 litres and 25 miles lifted in the tank

25 Mile Range indicated.

You might well have a better range than that. Or equally not, depends how you continue.

I have had 25 Miles Range show,

and after 20 miles there is 25 Miles range showing.

Looking forward after this wet weather ends to cool nights, fresh cool oxygen & Winter Spec Tesco Momentum

and see what Mileage to a tank i get.

This past months have been pathetic, the same as last winter with it being mild.

The Twincharger loves temps below 10*oC & 99 RON minimum with more % of Methanol / Ethanol in.

Not just for Economy, but more efficient and a bit more poke.

funny you should say that about the below 10c I set if to work at 4.45am and my mpg is worst when it quiet on the roads than when I come home about 4pm.

It takes near double the miles to get to 80 *oC oil temp when you set off at 4*oC or lower,

Compared to setting off and its 16*oC ambient or more.

So Autumn / Winter cold ambient & you are maybe 15 miles before the Engine is getting best Economy.

I can go 20 miles when it is cold, at 60 mph and it never gets to 90*oC indicated Oil Temp.

Nothing to Do with Lights on, Heater, Radio etc.

Just the Coolant is up to temp, the Oil is Not.

Go more than 20 Miles in cold air,

and you are probably getting better MPG than on a Warm day.
