Newbie question

Featured Replies

I'm new to VCDS so this might be a bit of a naive question. The vehicle is a 2014 Octavia 3 1.4TSI DSG.

I've been told by an independent garage that although VCDS can read fault codes on the latest Octavia it cannot fully clear them as VAG requires the car to be connected on line to their computer for the diagnostic system to do that. The vehicle also stores a separate history of fault codes even if they have been cleared and this info is uploaded automatically when a connection is established to the VAG computer system by the main dealer. This is so VAG can retain oversight of every fault even if repairs are done by an independent garage.

Is this correct or have I been misinformed?

Thanks MM

Really?

Would be intrested to see Ross Techs take up on this .

I find it hard to believe, on two main counts:

1} The date and time stamped on errors can be quite random, so there's no real valid data. (An error could arise twice, but over the course of 8 years, but the ECU show them as only months/days apart)

2} Given that some cars are just "unlucky" and generate a large amount of errors, you'd need a fairly large amount of NVR on the ECU to store these errors, and if you have to have the ECU replaced, all those errors would vanish.

Other reasons:

Taking the battery off generates a whole load of errors

Not all errors mean a light on the dash (for example disconnecting the footwell lights will raise an error, but nothing on the dash, nor in MaxiDot.)

TPMS s effectively generates an error code, this would need space to be stored. (see above)
