Recommend dipped bulbs

Featured Replies

Hopefull you guys can point me in the right direction.

I'm thinking about change my clear headlights for the OEM dark ones (11 reg). BTW I've called Skoda up and they say they will fit, fingers crossed but open to comments.

Now I'm thinking that since the new ones will have dark glass it will impact the brightness (heard put saying standard are crap). Therefore, first of all is the dipped beam bulb the same the same as the main beam bulb, I know that they are actually different bulbs but are they the same? Secondly, which ones are recommend to have for dipped beam?

Thanks

I wouldn't waste your time in changing as I have them on my Monte Carlo and they are **** poor. Your better off wrapping them with some sort of tint, but if you do decide to your better off getting night breaker plus or something a long those lines.

Thanks, will night breaker plus give me the same light in a dark head unit as I have today with a clear unit?

I can't say yes nor no but probably not.

Do you mean you called a Skoda Dealership and spoke to a Technician?

Spoke to the parts department of Skoda dealer. I'm guessing when he said he'd check that the bulbs were the same he didn't figure that my was possibly one of the last that had two headlight bulbs rather than one. Glad I didn't click buy this afternoon and waited! Was going to see if there was any at Castle Combe tomorrow to check before diving in.

I forgot to put I've never drove with clear headlights on the mk2 so I don't know.

Im finding this thread a little confusing, and i cant see what car youve got because im on the mobile site.

When you say you're changing your headlights from the 'clear' ones. Which ones do you have? The h4 reflector type or the projecter ones?

The problem with the black pack lights is they use the same bulb for both dip and high beam, its just a solonoid operated shutter system that lifts the beam level.

Its not the tinting of the plastic thats the problem as such, its the entire unit.

The silver lights use projectors as a dipped beam and a reflector for the high beam. Thats 4 h7 bulbs on whilst on high beam. So they perform better.

A simple way to improve the light output is fitting bulbs such as osram nightbreakers or philips extreme vision.

Better again, fit HID's, but only do this in projector lenses.

The projector units fitted with the one bulb/shutter system are even worse than this. The shutter doesn't lift the beam as you described, but simply mask off the beam to give the dipped pattern. In effect 50% of the light is wasted and the dip beam is very weak. I tried changing the bulbs on our 09 model for osram night breaker +90, but to be honest, they made little difference and even seem to be worse at near distance.

On our 14 model, it has the two bulb headlight units, projector for dip and reflector for main, with both bulbs on for main. Its a much brighter system, but the dip pattern from the projectors, is poor.

IMO from experience with other cars, reflector type headlights are superior to projector type.

You described it better than me! Haha.

Theres nothing wrong with reflectors, but i prefer projectors. Simply because you can then retrofit HID's with much more success and improve the output further

I was thinking of switching the clear for the black headlight units but as mentioned on here they would fit my car since it has the two bulb configuration so I'm stuck with the clear ones which by the sounds of it is best for the amount of light it gives.

is it 1 projector lens for dipped and 1 reflector for main or 2 reflector units?

If it is 1 projector then I would, as Otaylor38 recommended retrofit HID and upgrade the reflector unit to night breakers. If 2 reflectors then upgrade both to night breakers.

In my opinion and experience don't be tempted to fit HID to a reflector lens even if the kit and bulb says they are designed for such units....They are not. You will absolutely see a difference in the light output from the drivers seat but head on they are a danger to other road users, the light scatter is also really poor and no defined cut off as required for MOT purposes. They would probably fail an MOT not because they are retrofit and not because they are HID but because the beam pattern is non compliant.

If you have projector and reflector you are lucky, I have black pack and apart from aesthetics I hate them, and that's after a HID upgrade and levelling.

Get some spi-vision or fly-eye tint and use that, light output is only minimally affected and it is MOT compliant, cheap, plus can be removed easily. YouTube it, see what you think.

Nearly two years back we switched from a Elegance with the clear headlights and x4 H7 bulbs to a Monte with just the two (plus a pair of blue'ish sidelights that come on with dipped and high beam). On both vehicles the projector bulbs were replaced with Nightbreaker plus.

On dipped beam the Monte seems better than the Elegance, whereas on high beam it was the other way round, although not by much despite the extra two H7 reflectors. Possibly the Monte's lights are better aligned than the Elegance; read other members have seen lighting improvements by adjusting the light beam up a little.

Apologies for the slightly off topic question, but also looking for bulbs this evening as one of mine went earlier, and I noticed on power bulbs that there's some Philips Xtreme Vision +130% H7 bulbs which can be had for about £40. Surely not worth twice what the normal Philips Xtreme Vision +100% H7 bulbs are? My current bulbs are the latter so wondering whether to give the other ones ago? On a Fabia mk2 vRS

They're not going to give you twice the power so not worth twice the price.

I fitted Bosch 90+ to mine, got them for £7.50 a pair as a special deal from Europarts, I've found them better then the Osram Nightbreakers I was using, only got them try as they were a bargain.
