Part ex in one day?

Featured Replies

Looking for any guidance on what to watch out for and how to get the best deal / service when I go to part ex my Octavia against a Yeti.

I'm not asking what to look for in the Yeti as I've read threads on that and think I know the most common issues.

My question is that as the dealer (not a Skoda main dealer) is a 2.5-3 hour drive from me if rather not have to make the trip twice (once to test / buy & once to pick up) unless I have to.

What should I be asking before I go to see it?

I've already got photos, the spec sheet / codes, last two years of service history. The first owner was a Briskodian; The second owner used the same dealer for servicing.

It's done 4-5k miles for each of the past two years and serviced yearly (November time). It's up to 56k miles at present (dealer shows it as 49k).

If there is anything major wrong, I'll walk away. If it's minor, how much can I push for a deal on the spot?

Can I not take their 6 month warranty / Roadside assistance (as I suspect I'd have to return to them for work to be done) and negotiate a discount? How much could I expect it to reduce by?

How picky should I get with any faults that could be fixed before I take the vehicle?

Should I pay with credit card or bank transfer if I want it the same day?

Any hints or tips would be much appreciated.

Big Question, is can the dealer turn the car around same day, is the car fully prepped to a standard your happy with, do you have everything in place to change the same day? Insurance, money in place all paperwork for your currant car, not on a private plate that will be retained.

Re insurance, will you currant insurance company be able to Change and issue a cover note by email so the new car can be taxed?

Thanks for those questions to consider. Some I am on top of already.

Money is all ready to go. Insurance I'm hopefully finalising tomorrow (if not the dealer offers free 7 day cover).

I have all the correct paperwork for my car: service book/handbook, V5C, receipt for purchase. Is there anything else I should take?

No private plates on either vehicle now. There was one on the car I'm going to look at, but that's been sorted.

The dealer has asked me to give them a few days notice so they can ensure car is ready for my visit. It looks like the cambelt is overdue a change so I've made them aware of this and will seem a discount if it's not been do e when I get there.

And I think that your first point would be my biggest concern. How much can I negotiate a discount in lieu of them doing the work?

My best local price for cambelt & water pump change is £300 (Skoda are £550 IIRC), but the dealer selling the car would obviously be able to do it in their own garage for the cost of parts I expect. Can I realistically expect a discount in that region?

Anyone else got any thoughts to add?
