Gear box end flote

Featured Replies

Has any one had or know of problems with the end flote on the gear box?
Ive got the 6 speed box and the 2 liter diesel engine. I havent noticied any problems with the gear box at all!

As im getting the gearbox and duel mass fly wheel changed to day the garage phoned me up to let me know about it!

It's not unheard of with the 6 speed box, there was a thread about it on here not long ago. It only tends to happen at quite high mileages though, the one I'm thinking of was a taxi with about 180k on the clock if I remember correctly.

Cheers Nick. Would it be worth while getting a reconditioned gear box as well? I got a quote for bout £500 for the end flote.

I suppose it depends how much more you would have to pay to get a decent re-con box, but if your gearbox is otherwise ok I think I would just get the fault fixed. £500 seems to be around the going rate for this problem to be sorted.

How many miles has the car done? If you weren't getting any symptoms before though I think I would question whether this really needs to be fixed yet.

it's got 130,000 miles on the clock. The garage were saying it's the final drive end flote.

Have they already changed the dmf and clutch? If so and the cars back together and driving OK then perhaps leave the other problem until there are some obvious symptoms.

any one know what the symptoms are?
Theres a bit of a squeak in 5th when I relese the clutch. Doesent matter what speed im doing though!

My 2.0TDi with 6 speed manual has just started making a small whining noise when changing down to 5th and releasing the clutch. The car has now done 125k miles. I was hoping to live with it until I needed a new clutch or some other major gearbox or engine work. It was interesting to come across this thread seeing someone else with the same symptoms.

The usual symptoms are clutch drag, making it particularly difficult to get into 1st gear when setting off, or trouble getting back into neutral when coming to a stop.

mines got a new clutch kit and duel mass fly wheel on it!

What I meant was, the usual symptoms of gearbox end float are the clutch dragging, even with a new clutch and flywheel.

Unless you have obvious signs of clutch drag, eg crunching when trying to select a gear, I wouldn't worry about the end float in the 'box for now.
