Fabia 105 CR oil temp

Featured Replies

Guys,

Please can those of you who have a 1.6 CR engined car do a quick check for me next time you go for a drive.

Please can you see how long it takes your engine oil to hit 93 degrees.

My fabia seems to be chewing diesel, and it seems to be doing it when the engines cold.

When its above 93 degrees i'm seeing 50+ mpg

Below 93 degrees i'm seein 39-42.

Thats to be expected.  Whats not expected is the time its taking to get up to temp.

Atm its about 20 mins - 13 miles to get to 93 degrees, which seems quite a long time. (irrespective of fast, mredium or slow roads)

I'm just wondering whether my thermostat is opening slightly early and as such retarding the heating up period of the engine.

I'm also aware the CR engine is meant to be more thermally efficient than my previous PD, hence this question to see what everybody else is getting as a comparisson.

Many thanks in advance

Andy

Well we have both engines in different cars Monte Carlo like your and in the golf mk6 and the monte returns 71 mpg and the golf is getting 75 mpg so you may need to alter your driving style , I'm doing a 27 mile journey and rarely exceeds your 93 temp and that's on a dual carriageway cruise set at 60 mph and the son is in the monte doing similar but cruising at 70 mph and still getting 71 mpg with an engine with 12k on the clock, it takes me 40 minutes to do the 27 miles and temp is around or just about 93

How are people determining the temps without an oil temperature gauge?

The monte has an oil temp gauge on the display.

The temp on mine is ~93-98 depending on whether its on an A road or dual carriageway.

My question isn't so much the temperature yours running at, but the time it takes to get up to temperature.

When its warmed up its returning what it should do.

My observation is it seems to take a long time to get up to temperature and as such returns a lower mpg while in the warming up state.

Thus my query about how long others are taking to get up to their normal running temp so I can do a comparison :)

What oil are you running, and are you on Fixed Servicing or Variable.

I would look at changing the Oil, or more important the filter.

Is your Coolant (Anti freeze) strength correct?

Your Coolant temp should get up to 90-92 quick enough if you are talking UK Ambient Temps in Summer.

Mid teens and higher.

Your engine is not that cold, or the fluids, Coolant and Oil at start up if it is not near Freezing or below when you start the car.

Then once your oil is up to a good operating temp, 92-93*oC ish.

the job of the Coolant,  that is Antifreeze / Summer Coolant,  & the Oil (which is a coolant also,)

is to keep the Oils temp down and near 92 *oC, or get it down soon or quickly once you stop having the engine under load, and the oil temp up..

Your Diesel Engine in Summer seems to be running the sort of Temps a Petrol Twincharger might indicate in Cooler Months,

when ambient temps are below 10*oc.

Mine heats up really quickly, I can do 2 miles across town to work and the needle will be upright with the display saying about 90. Then if I pass work and 2 mins later on the dual carriageway it takes no time at all to reach 105-107.

Doesn't return 71mpg because I don't have about, usually cruise about 70-75 or 80 if in a rush. I get about 65mpg. :)

Umm

We've only recently got the car (6 weeks ago) , and the service, cam belt and water pump was all done by the skoda dealer prior to us getting it so I can only presume they are the Skoda approved items at the correct dilution rates etc. (fixed service interval)

The water temp indicator moves to the 90 in about 3-4 miles, but from what i can make out this is more an off, normal, overheat gauge.

Its the engine oil temp one that seems to be going up slowly, only hitting operating temp about the 20mins/13 mile mark.

Where are you, and what is the Ambient Temperature when it takes that long?

It might be expected in Winter / Cold weather to take that long,

it seems a bit much in warmer weather.

Is there no Part Numbers and invoice for the parts used, no point assuming.

and check what oil was used at the service. Many Engines do usually use more fuel while getting up to operating temp

It does seem a bit long until yours gets up to 90*oC

Maybe the next few times see how many miles you cover until it gets to an Indicated 50*oC Oil temp,

& then how many miles more to get to 92*oC

Obviously the speed being driven will mean there are variations, even in the same weather & Ambient temps.

13 miles at UK nsl's seems about right i would think.

Slow getting to the best oil operating temperatures seems OK.

(I would bother more where you at indicated oil temps at over 100 in a diesel when just cruising on the Motorway unless

it is quite warm weather, and a loaded with some weight in the car.)

sunny cornwall - 20+ degrees today

The service was conducted by them after we paid for the car but before we picked it up. So there is no paper work for the service other than their stamp in the service book.

The pump & cambelt - I have the receipt, but that just states water pump and the repair kit, but no details on the coolant again carried out by the skoda dealer at the time of the service but I insisted on this receipt as I paid for this extra.

I'll have a look tonight when I take it to work to see how long it takes to indicate the 50 degrees and then to 92 ish.

I appreciate your time

just dropped my daughter to work

Outside temp 19 degrees - Engine cold

3 miles to hit 90 degrees on water gauge, and also 50 degrees on oil.

Then it hit running oil temp 93 degrees at 12 mile point.

25% A road 75 dual carriage way - 35-45 mph on A roads 65-70 on dual carriageway

Sounds as if it behaves as exactly it should.

Thx for the feedback.

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally got around to checking mine this morning (9500 mile 10month old Monte Carlo Tech Estate)... but had in my head that you were looking for times to 97degrees!

Anyway, at a chilly 6 degree outside temperature it took 12 miles and 21 minutes from cold to reach 97 degrees!
