Octavia 1.2 Tsi

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

Next year my leasing on my Mk2 FL 2.0 Tdi ends so I may trade it in for a new Octavia Mk3. Problem is that I cannot afford a Tdi 150bhp or even a 1.6 tdi so I have to go for a petrol. I only carry my small boy in the car and hardly ever any passengers or heavy luggage. I do about 10,000 miles a year now, so not a stellar mileage. I guess I will have a manual, though I have never driven a car with the DSG.

Question is - is the 1.2 tsi underpowered for such a big car, or do I really need the 1.4 140bhp model? How many rpm in 6th does the 1.2/1.4 tsi do at say, 70-80 mph and what mpg are owners getting?

That's all, thanks in advance for any replies from those of you who have a 1.2 or 1.4.

Best advice. Have a test drive and make your own mind up everyone is different.

The 1.2 engine is a super little unit. Turbocharging mixed with v light weight (a 1.2 TSI hatch weighs less than 1200kgs) means it probably has the performance of a 1.8 petrol/lower powered 2.0 petrol of yesteryear.

Sure it won't be a rocket ship and is bound to be a bit slower (particularly in gear) than your current 2.0 TDI but I suspect you'll be pleasantly surprised when you give it a go.

Not quite the same but I had a Fabia TSi 105 as a courtesy car some time ago just for a few hours and I absolutely loved it.

All I will say is if you drive it to extract the performance don't expect great economy (same with the 1.4). Also these smaller turbo units (from experience) do show their lack of capacity more so than a diesel when you begin to load them up and no doubt become even more thirsty.

If it had to be a petrol I would have to strongly recommend the 1.4 as it's quite cheap and offers v similar performance to the TDI 150, but the 1.2 is more than adequate and an even cheaper alternative to a TDI 105.

I have the 1.2tsi in my Rapid and it pulls very hard under load. I think the Octavia is slightly heavier but shouldn't be any different in performance. The mpg is very good too :)

I'm usually getting around 47 to 55 which is good.

As others have said give it a try and see what you think :)

Good luck.

If you mainly drive around town the 1.2 will be enough, if not the 1.4 will make life easier.

As said test drive the two.

For some 1.2 tsi is enough, for others 2.0 tsi is not.

I have just moved to a 1.2tsi from a 2008 VW Touran 1.9tdi. They have about the same power and comparable consumption, but the Octavia is lighter so it feels quicker (or certainly nimbler) to me. I test drove the 1.4 which was quicker, but the 1.2 is fine. No regrets so far...
