TV remote not working

Featured Replies

Recently discovered that my TV remote does not work any more. Tried changing the batteries, variety of distances, using a working Sky remote and using a 4-in-1 jobby but nothing works. I've also noticed that the red receiver LED on the TV doesn't light in response to the remote being pressed, which suggests to me the problem lies in the IR receiver on the TV......... The TV works absolutely fine if controlled from the front panel.....

Does anyone have any idea if that diagnosis is correct, and if it is, how much it would likely cost to repair? I'm reasonably competent with a soldering iron so I'd be happy to redo any dry joints if it's a common problem. TV is a 10ish year old Loewe Xelos 28" widescreen and works perfectly apart from this so I'd rather not chuck it away just yet ;)

Thanks, Chris

So, does that mean you are no longer King of the House? Without your magic box, you cannot be King.

Try using a long stick to change the channels etc, or get SWMBO to change it for you :D

To check whether it's the remote or the IR receiver that's broken, point the remote at a camera (phone, digi cam etc.) and see whether you can see a white light emitting from the IR diode when you press the button. If you can, the remote is working, if not the remote is broken...

Well it's not really a problem as channel changing is controlled via the Sky remote (which works fine to the Sky box) and volume through the amp, so I only need the remote to turn the tele on and off

Someone at work tried the camera trick so I'll give it a go....
