Cam chain tensioner on the TSI

Featured Replies

I picked up a 60 reg Octavia VRS yesterday, in blue with 30k from a Skoda dealer in Reading. To say I'm over the moon with it is an understatement!!

I basically bought it over the phone as it was too far to go and view the car but it's perfect. The only thing is the dealer told me it was a T FSI so I did my research and was prepared to get the cam belt and water pump changed soon as it's coming up to 4 years old. I had read about the TSI engine and the whole cam chain tensioner thing and to be honest I wasn't fussed either way which engine I got when finding a car. Fast forward to collecting the car and what was supposed to be a T FSI is actually a TSI.

So, I don't need to change the cam belt now as there isn't one but should I invest in a new cam chain tensioner to be on the safe side and if so what sort of cost am I looking at?

It's got a full skoda SH and a 12 month warranty so I'm tempted to leave it for now but just wondering.

Thanks

Id leave it for now whilst its under warranty, you can always take out a extended warranty to cover it later on.

I've had two skoda stealers in London quoting just shy of 1 grand. I had also contacted an independent vag specialist garage who would do it for £600 with 2 year warranty should the tensioner fail. So no brainier which one i will go for. Just like what Micky said leave it while under warranty.

Does the £600 quote include a new timing chain and slide rails as well as the tensioner?

£600 - £1000..... Seriously!!

Jesus, wasn't expecting that, makes the TFSI seem like a better bet.

Will have to weigh up the cost of an extended warranty then perhaps in 12 months time.

Thanks guys.

The price includes tensioner, chain, top and bottom covers. No mentioned of guide rails though. As I am planning to keep the car for long as it is a great car so will be making sure this is changed.

That is a good price.   The 4 slide rails - not guide rails as I previously posted - would add circa £30 to the bill.
