Side light problem

Featured Replies

I have a 13 plate Seat Toledo (sister car to Rapid, but basically same car) and I have a problem with the side lights. The passenger side lights work fine, but the drivers side ones won't light up. I get the error bulb on the dashboard as soon as the ignition key is turned on (as it's trying to put DRL on I guess).  I swapped the bulbs over from passenger to drivers side and the bulbs are all fine. The side lights are faulty on the drivers side both front and back. I checked the fuse for the side lights (fuse #23) and that is fine too. Had it not been none of them would have worked though.

Car is a taxi and is coming up to the 60K service and is still under the 2 year unlimited mileage warranty. So I can get it fixed by them anyway. It's just a pain as warranty work needs to go in on a different day to service and so that's work lost on another day.

I had this a while ago on my Citigo and it turned out to be the DRL fuse and not the sidelights fuse. Might be worth checking.

Thanks for that! I just checked my user manual and the DRL are under fuse #17. However this also controls Radio (START/STOP) and the radio has been working fine. I'll check it tomorrow anyway (it's dark now) and will report back.

Are the fuses handed for the sidelights?

O/S & N/S?

It certainly seems just a fuse issue.

This issue is still ongoing. Took the car in for it's 60K service and they were told about the problem when I booked it in. However on picking the car up they said they could not find any fault at all!  Diagnostics not coming up with any error codes. I don't understand this.... what's the point of the diagnostics if it's not picking up the glaringly obvious light warning on the dashboard!?

Anyway it's gone in today for this specific issue to be tracked down. They've pencilled it in for two days of work as they might need to "strip the car down" to find the fault.

I checked the fuses and they were all OK. But I did speak with soemone recently who knows a lot more than me about more modern cars... and he said it sounds like a fault in the parking light circuit. And more than likely something to do with the indicator arm. Now I don't ever use my parking lights but it does seem to make a bit of sense. And the dashboard error comes on as soon as the car is started... it doesn't "wait" until the lights are switched on before coming up with the error which is what happens if a bulb is blown.

I'll update this later on when the dealership finally works out what the problem is.

In answer to Stormchaser above... the fuses are handed for the headlight bulbs, but not for anything else. It's one fuse for sidelights etc.

Diagnostic equipment wont pick up faults with bulbs/running lights. It is for dealing with engine management.

You're in the right direction by checking fuses anyhow

This is doing my head in now no idea all fuses and bulbs are good

Crawford, i intitally thought this was a new post.

Perhaps start a new thread on this issue, you may get more of a response in return:thumbup:

A generic OBD reader might only give engine related codes but anything that's half decent and VAG specific should be able to show lighting fault codes.

If there is a warning shown on the dash board then it'll almost certainly have a stored error, below is an example from VCDS:

02395 - Parking Light Front Right (M3)
010 - Open or Short to Plus - Intermittent
             Freeze Frame:
                    Fault Status: 00101000
                    Fault Priority: 4
                    Fault Frequency: 5
                    Reset counter: 221
                    Mileage: 82342 km
                    Time Indication: 0
                    Date: 2011.07.16
                    Time: 15:53:19

Check with VCDS that there are only fault codes for the bulbs in question. If there are other fault codes, it might give you a clue where the fault may lie.

Otherwise, get the wiring diagram and confirm:

- the wires from the BCM to lamps has continuity

- the wires between the lamps and ground has continuity

- all wires are capable of carrying enough current to light the bulbs

- the bulb holders/connectors are undamaged and in good condition

Where are you based?

Yes under skoda owners forum, it isin Rapid & Spaceback, create a new topic from there.

Langers2k. I understand about VCDS just presumed that in this situation only a generic code reader was used.

Crawford is starting a new thread for himself he may need some advice with VCDS if possible, as this is an old thread dug up.
