Air con not working! Help?

Featured Replies

First off, thinks its actually climatric (econ button)

Interior fan works, although if its switched off, when i press the fan up button once, the fan will slowly keep raising speed till max is this correct?

Next, often i can hear alot of rumbling from passanger footwell. Sounds like cogs / motors constantly swtiching and moving back and forth.

Wilk alk the above in mind, any idea where to start? Ive owned the car for just over a year and its always been the same. Unsure if theres even pressure in the air con system

Now, when i switch on the econ, which I guess should activate the air con, the cooling fans dont acrivate and the comoressor doesnt kick in.

Thanks in advance

Econ will turn off the aircon.  You will either need the display to say 'auto' or nothing to enable the A/C (there are only 3 options to toggle through)

When the aircon compressor *should* be working both rad fans should be spinning.  Normally when the aircon compressor engages on my 110 I can hear a slight change in engine note.

The noises you hear will be the motor/flap assembly behind the glovebox.  You might get lucky and find it just has a few bits of leaf and pine needles jammed in it....  Have a search on here, it is quite a common problem.

ECON Is economy mode, No Air Con.

With the car idelling do the revs drop when your press ECON & rise slightly when you press AUTO ?

****As above, beat me to it.****

It might need a regass if not working. As the compressor won't kick in if the gas is low

Ok, so if I have the blowers on, and econ off, the air con should be on?

Also if its says 'auto' its likely the aircon will be on.

But if econ is on, then aircon will be off

Correct?

Sorry to sound a bit dim but im used to cars with aircon buttons, simply on/off! Lol

As for thw flaps / cogs. I will have a look into it. Cheers

Correct.

Econ = No A/C

Auto (and a suitably low temp selected) = A/C

(blank) = A/C

Thanks.

Just done the climatronic diagnosics and showing no faults. Aircon def isint working, fans dont activate and ac clutch doesnt engage, revs dont change either.

Anybody know of any popular issues i should check before diving streight in for a regas?

I believe the clutch will not engage if the sensors inhibit it due to low or no refrigerant, so get it checked out by a re-gas company. Some don't charge if they find the gas weight was correct.

In addition it might be worth checking that you are getting +12v on the wires to the a/c clutch.  Not sure in what order things are meant to happen, but I imagine:

 - refrigerant check

 - rad fans spin up

 - a/c clutch engages

Where are you ? I just regassed my own system as they sell re gas kits at halfords

If fans are not kicking in i don't think aircon clutch engages either

some kind of safety thing

If fans are not working this could be the relay under battery tray or a fuse issue on the top of battery. one of those 3 green fuses.

try removing then and re inserting then if not blown as sometimes it can re trigger fans.

Hold on a minute... So if i have my blowers on warm on a cold day and i havent pressed ECON that means the aircon is turned on?

Yep, warm conditioned air.

Yep, warm conditioned air.

and the fastest way to demist the windows inside on a wet day.

Well you learn something everyday

and the fastest way to demist the windows inside on a wet day.

which is then really annoying when air con doesn't work when it is cold outside.  :grrr:

I'm pretty sure the aircon will not work below a set temperature. I'm not sure at what temp though.

Ooo i didn't know that. Will see if mine works Sunday morning as I'm off to work at 5.30

I don't suggest using these refill canisters at all. There is no was of knowing how much gas you've got in your system, how much you are putting it, what the pressures are etc etc. They were on about banning them a few years ago.

Best bet is to talk to your local/known garage. Chances are, if they find a leak, they won't charge you. (As they won't gas the system).

80-90% of the customers at work don't use the A/C unless it's hot outside. Most people don't realise the A/C is a dehumidifier, rather than a cooler. It works wonders with condensation. In fact, I think I use mine more in the winter than in the summer.

Kwik Fit charge £45.99 for a regass iirc a and no charge if it leaks

Correct . air con won't come on if temp is lower than 5 degrees

The kit from halfords has a gauge built on to the trigger so you can check the pressure in the system and then you only add a small amount of coolant I have done mine my self and it's been fine for the past 4 month air con on constantly

I've used a one from halfords as well with no issues lovely cold aircon and loads left to do a few more regasses.

Yep done mine a friends golf and even me brothers mazda 2

I have a air con pump if it turns out to be that
