Rear brake lights not working?

Featured Replies

First off, I apologise if this isn't the right section, this is my first thread.

I have a Skoda Fabia 1.4 TDI Ambient? 2006 MK1

My rear break lights won't work and I have a glow plug light flashing on the dash.

A friend who runs a tuning shop put the diagnostics on it and he said brake switch sensor and 2 new bulbs.

I've followed a very helpful guide on here to remove the dash and fit a new sensor, to no avail.

I check the fuse which looked fine, I even switched two fuses around to make sure, still nothing.

I've also put in two new bulbs, they just won't work.

Now I'm stuck on what else it could be, if not the fuse or the sensor which is what the diagnostic said.

NOTE: the top break light works (one in the roof/window) but the rear ones will not. The reverse lights, rear indicators also work.

Anyone had this problem or have any idea what it could be? Would be a real help.

Thanks.

Before I even clicked through I anticipated the flashing glow plug light. Yes, this is a FAQ.

Replace the switch at the pedal, using a genuine Skoda part.

When you fitted it did you twist it till it clicked?

I did yes, I've even taken it out a few times to make sure, followed the guide religiously as well.

So it has to be genuine Skoda you're saying?

On the thread I'm sure people were using aftermarket ones from ebay.

If it's of any relevance, they put in my reg to get the model of sensor I need and gave me this one.

This is what it says on the box:

'Genuine Intermotor Automotive Components'

Just looked

This is the exact one I have.

It is different to the one I took off because this is Skoda's new model of sensor, which should still work.

Pattern brake light switches are known to "not work" in some cases yes.

What do you mean by 'pattern' haha?

Sorry, this is my first car and the only experience I have is the front end things like wheels/tyres/brakes/suspension/bearings etc, haha.

A pattern part just means it's not a genuine Skoda one. If you got the Intermotor one then that is not genuine but the one on that ebay link is because it's from Derek Slack Motors who are a Skoda main dealer. You need the genuine one.

Are you sure you're putting the right brake light bulbs in too? They are 21 watt single filament (382) bulbs.

They're double filament, my dad was surprised when he say that as well.

When I bought the new bulbs, they put my reg in and they're the ones they gave me as well, double filament.

The brake light are the bottom ones on the 4 bulbs right?

I hope I'm not being a retard and it's something this simple.

Can't find a decent thing on Google for which lights which on the Fabia rear light cluster.

Nope, the brake lights are the top bulbs and single filament (382).

The double filament bulbs in the bottom are tail and fog (and they are offset pin! (566). Standard stop/tail bulbs won't fit because the pins are not offset. Only the driver's side fog usually functions.

What the **** lol.

So I've replaced 2 bulbs that are otherwise fine?

I'll go town tomorrow and get some and make sure they give me the right ones.

All this stress today and I had the wrong ****** bulbs.

I'll post tomorrow, see if I can resolve it with the right bulbs, lol.

If that's the case, the bulbs are the only problem, and the sensor is otherwise fine!

May as well keep the new sensor in now but the top brake light (top of the rear window) still works, just not the 2 rear side ones.

I would imagine the only issue you actually had was the brake pedal switch was duff.  It's normally the only reason the brake lights ALL stop working, and the glow plug light only confirms this further.

PS: Diagnostics equipment also doesn't usually pick out the need to replace an actual light bulb.  At least I've never known VCDS to do this, not on the mark 1 fabia.  I imagine the only actual fault was for the brake switch and I recommend using OEM as the V.A.G group are always producing updated versions when they find original parts are not up to the job.  Pattern parts made in Taiwan or wherever are often worse still.

Wouldn't it be simpler just to visually check which ones not working

Haha, it'll be fine when you get the correct bulbs   Pity you don't live near me - got loads of those bulbs lying around.

Well, when the glow plug light (diesels only) flashes, normally none of the brake lights work. If you don't know that this is actually signalling a fault with the switch, you could spend days chasing a wiring, bulb, or fuse fault that doesn't exist!

Previously on both my cars, when the glow plug light had been flashing it had simply been that both brake light bulbs had blown together.

DB.

Don't keep us in suspense, Adam  :p  Are they working now?
