Miltek or mufflerectomy

Featured Replies

As per the title guys, should I go all out and buy a cat back system or just go for a mufflerectomy saving 100s. Is there any gains over havingt he mid pipe as brand? I'm going to be going all out on the car with hybrid decat and fmic will I be held back by having a mufflerectomy over an after markt sports exhaust?

Cheers

You don't need to do anything if you're not going over ~220bhp.

You don't need to do anything if you're not going over ~220bhp.

I'd say it would be beneficial for it to be decatted even if it's on the standard down pipe.

Depends how noisy you want it, a miltek is not much more noisy than a standard system, but a mufflerectomy is pretty loud as you then have no silencers at all.

I've gone for a small backbox with a Longlife dp back system, its got a nice sound on full boost but still nice and quiet driving steady :)

The only thing I don't like about the standard exhaust personally is the way it sits. Even with new hangers it doesn't hug the bumper as snugly as I'd like. Something a mufflerectomy would fix as they'd reposition it properly before welding it in place and there is minimal weight once the back box is removed so the mounts won't sag over time either.

As said above, an after market exhaust doesn't really make a difference on a diesel and unless your pushing over well over 200bhp it's not restrictive, so spending loads of money on it is pretty pointless unless it's part of your future power goals.

I love my Milltek and decat, sounds barely louder than standard when driving normally, just a bit deeper, and even when on boost it sounds more than acceptable. Plus i like the twin tailpipes as they are not noticably different to OE unless you know what you're looking for.

Bonus for me was my original back box was getting quite corroded so made sense to upgrade at the time.

If I was you I'd listen to a 0 box system as the sound they make on idle is really marmite. When I was running decat and mufflerectomy I got fed up of people asking if my car was ****ed because of the jet engine sound on idle. The noise on full boost was awesome though but in the end I got that fed up of the funny looks and comments I got a performance back box welded in so will be similar to a miltek system I'd of thought, not much louder than standard under normal driving but I nice roar to it when on full boost. My advice is get a small box in it unless you like the jet engine noise on idle

Thanks for all ur help guys, I'm going to be looking at hybrid and fmic. I'm guessing at that point I'd be restricted by the mufflerectomy?

This type of thread makes me laugh every time:

Q: "I want my quiet tractor to sound like a noisy scooby"

A: "you can make it sound like an F15 flying over a noisy tractor"

It's a DIESEL, you cannae change the laws of physics cap'n.  :D

Some people actually like the diesel low rawrr. Me included. And diesels dont sound anythinf like a jet engine

and ermmmmm you can also get a boxer diesel engine these days. Just saying

I'm having the same debate, just going to try and find videos on you tube so I can hear this jet engine noise. Also I don't want it to be intrusive under normal driving hence my indecision!

The Jet engine noise is hardly noticeable when stood outside the car and can't be heard inside the car.

And the engine still drowns out the exhaust except when pushing on.
