Fuel Low Warning Tone on startup

Featured Replies

I'm aware that when you turn the car on, the fuel warning light goes on and then turns off (as do the likes of the engine warning etc), it's standard in every car.

However, in the last week, my car's fuel warning tone has sounded on every startup, along with the light. The gauge then goes up to the appropriate amount, so the gauge isn't faulty.

I recently out Esso 97 unleaded in, which happened to coincide with the starting of this tone - but can't see it would make a difference, I've run it on this / tesco momentum throughout my ownership.

Wondered if perhaps the tone for 'fuel warning' is used for anything else, like perhaps the 'cold weather' warning? It has been noticeably colder these last few early morning rises. But it has been doing it duri the day, when the temperature has been in excess of 9degrees. Just wondered if anyone else has this tone on ignition. Will try take a video tomorrow.

Does the low fuel warning light go out after initial start up?

Low temp should not sound until below 4°c.

Do you see a spanner in instrument cluster? If so, you car needs to be serviced. Sound is the same if memory serves.

Edit: What is mileage, or how old it is?

Car is at 9500 miles - PCP is 12,000 a year and is less than a year old. It says 'insp' where it displays mileage, briefly on ignition too.

Fuel warning light goes out.

Take it from this it is a tone to indicate I need a service? I thought my 'service' was at 1 year of my PCP, regardless of mileage. Is it just a rough guideline?

If there's a INSP showing on the dash it could be it's due, car need's a service every 10,000 miles, perhaps take it to your local dealer and show them, better to be safe than sorry

Ah, right. I see. Thanks, all. First car - so unfamiliar with such things. Will give the garage a call this weekend to see what they say. :-)

Hope you get it all sorted :)

I was going to say INSP time maybe but I couldn't remember whether you got the beep tone as well on start up. Not sure about the light (low fuel) also showing still on start up?????

I contacted dealer today, they said it means my car is due a service. This tone signifies that - it just happens to be coincidentally the same tone used to indicate low fuel warning.

The fuel warning light comes on when I turn the key, along with every other warning light. This is standard I'm every car. They then go out shortly after, indicate there is no problem with the car. I was just associating the tone with the fuel light coming on- albeit briefly - but it turned out to be completely unreleased. Service time then for the baby! She's still too young!

My low fuel light doesn't show on every start up, only when low on fuel.

When you put the key in the vehicle and turn it to the ignition position - not turning it beyond this point to actually start the engine - but just enough that the electronics come on, all the emergency warnings will come on. Airbag, Engine warning, Fuel warning etc. They will all then turn out after a second or two. It is the same in most vehicles as far as I'm aware. Certainly,  this Citigo, the Hyundai i20 I drove before my Citigo, and the Volkswagen Golf 1.6 I learned to drive have all done this. It was even explained by the driving instructor. They all go out after a second, or if the engine is started. I believe it's a sign that warning lights are working, but then go out because there is no problem with the vehicle.

Yes I agree with the rest of the lights, like a check as you switch on. I will re check mine again but I don't think I see the low fuel light each time. Same in my Mazda too.

Certainly the fuel light coming on with the rest of the lights has been a characteristic of mine since purchase. The i20 did it too! :-)

Most definately does not show a low fuel light on the turn of the key.

But then I have half a tank of fuel :notme:

Same in the Mazda, light no showy until I have none, or very little left.

Your Citigo must be a newer model and they have changed things.
