Wheel balancing, have I goofed up?

Featured Replies

So recently I bought a set of alloys with winter tyres on and last week I cleaned them and applied a ceramic coating.

As part of this I noticed some little metal bits stuck on the rim which I didn't know what they were for so I removed them as part of cleaning. I assumed that having bits of metal stuck to a wheel was dangerous as they'd eventually fly off and thought maybe they were for repairing our something so kept them in my garage.

Now I've read something that's made me realize they're for balancing... does that mean I need to get them rebalanced before I fit them?

Feel a bit of a fool now!

Whoops!

Yes.

Yes but it gets worse than that for you though!

The super duper coating you've just put on will probably mean the weights won't be able to stick properly. You may not notice this straight away but over a short period of time you'll start to lose them.

Guess how I know this! :notme:

Luckily for me my wheels were still off the car and the weights were on the floor by them. I had to refit using a thin double sided tape to get them to stay put.

Or drive very slowly so you'll never know they aren't balanced........
