TSI engines & Octane boosters

Featured Replies

Guys,

we have bad quality fuels in Egypt , so i sometimes adds Octane Booster to my car when refueling up ,

i wanted to ask could this damage my engine in any way?

we only have RON 92 & RON 95 in egypt & i use 92 as the 95 is very very expensive & both are not even real 92 & 95 as the quality is very bad,

so i add RON92 fuel + Octane booster manly from an american brand called STP .

I've used them on a diesel before now & had no adverse effects, in fact they improved the economy by about 4 or 5 mpg, not a lot but worth having.

As for the petrol version, here in the UK I usually use super unleaded which I think is 97 or 99 Octane, so don't use them. I suppose could try it with standard unleaded, just to see what the results are, but with the super unleaded being easy to get I don't see the need really.

Have you written  to  Skoda  or spoken to your dealer for their recommendations ?

Also, isn't the minimum octane rating for the vehicle shown on the inside of the fuel filler flap? This should tell you if the vehicle has been set up for local market fuel conditions.

I didn't ask my local dealer about it yet frankly

the fuel cap states 92 to 98 could be used,

My only concern is that could they Octane Booster damage the engine in any way?

If it says 92 RON is OK then I would stick to that. Skoda would have mapped the engine to handle 92.

Personally I would be cautious over the use of octane boosters. Some of them may contain manganese which would may not be beneficial for the engine.

I have a load of octane booster in my garage. I use it to uprate the 97 RON fuel for my classic 1960's high performance motorcycles. And the brand I use also contains phosphorus and other additives that is meant to mimic the characteristics of lead replacement petrol which is not now available in the UK. The use of these additives is not required or desirable in a modern engine.
