ticking noise

Featured Replies

Anyone had this on new Octavia [mine's a 2.0FSI Elegance hatch ] ?

Yesterday I had to park after only about 5 mins. drive from cold. While the engine was still running, but car parked, there was a loud fast ticking from the dash, like an old fashioned kitchen clock. Stopped when engine was stopped, even when ignition still on. Fired up again and ticking back even at idle. An hour later, still there but quieter, now gone away completely. [Car's done 2000 miles]

Any guesses?? [No, it ain't a time bomb 'cause the car's still here!]

I also hear the same ticking noise, usually when the ignition is turned on . I think it is something to do with the air conditioning control as this is where the sound comes from. It seems to stop once the engine is running

This was the other way around. It only sounded while the engine was running - as soon as the engine stopped [ignition and accessories still switched on] the ticking stopped. Sounded like a single fast tappet but inside the dash. Didn't happen this morning though so maybe it was a visiting alien now gone back to Planet Rover.

Mine has it too and has done for all of its 20,000 miles. Notice it when engine off but ignition still on.

mum's octy does it... engine off, ignition on

My A4 did this too

Do you think it is osmething to do with things that go on working after stopping the car? Like when the fan keeps going for half an hour!

I think it's part of the re-circ system: when you put the car into reverse, or spray windshield washers, it puts the fan system into re-circ automatically to avoid gases &c. being drawn into the cabin. I suspect it also does the same when you turn off the engine, and then opens the flaps back up when you start up again.
