'Lower Drink Drive Limit for Scotland', Possibly / Hopefully before Christmas.

Featured Replies

I note that, as usual, there are no statistics to show how many fataccs are actually caused by people who have 50 to 80 Ug alcohol/100ml readings.

I certainly don't condone drunk drivers but doubt many, if any, accidents are cause by those in the 50-80 zone.  This will be a big issue for "the morning after" and puts paid to any would live and work in rural area have a drink the night before

So don't drink if you've got to drive the next day.

Driving is dangerous enough without adding extra risk no matter how small unnecessarily. Especially on rural high speed roads.

Personally I hate having to drive after not getting a decent nights sleep let alone on the phone, hung over etc.

I've heard a lot of complaints from people I know who stay out in the sticks recently due to this change which annoys me as they seem to think it's their right to drive potentially over the limit. It's not a right to drive, let alone drunk.

I have just been having a look at Personal 'Digital Breathalyzers'  to give as Christmas Gifts.

I see the various sites & Products and prices,

and Amazon & Ebay sellers.

??

So has anyone any Experience or advice on what is worth buying,  functions, is accurate enough,

just for those that need to check for 'Day After' self testing ?

Anything VFM worth Buying?

Didn't say it was right or I would do it, just pointing out the dangers of having anything to drink the night before - many rural folk have no option but drive every day of the week - whether its the car to go to work or a tractor or quad bike to feed farm stock.

So you don't drink!

My job has an almost nil alcohol level restriction, therefore on the days I would be working I don't drink for 24 hours prior to going to work. End of.

It really isn't difficult.

AGAIN i say i am not saying it is right or would do it but AGAIN pointing out that many rural dwellers NEED to drive 7 days a week, every week of the year.

I agree It really isn't difficult to chose not to have a drink and drive the next day if you do have days off. This simply means that those that need to drive EVERY day need to go on the wagon. farmers, keepers, carers etc  beware.

It can be a whole deal changer for the economy and workplaces in Scotland and for those driving into Scotland..

A mistake and your Job can be out the window.

I do not drink in pubs since the smoking ban came in,

but do like a pint outside on a nice day at a country pub etc.

I can not understand why the Politicians have licensed bars and subsidised alcohol in their workplace,

but it is time that is stopped, just because we pay their travel expenses should not mean they can have a drink after work.

But now even though many Workers have near Zero Drink Allowed before working or driving.

the change will be huge,

as said Rural Stayers, stopping overnight, travellers, workers on the road,

But any one, Car Mechanics will be not going out before Saturday Morning or Monday say.

Lorry Drivers that are Trampers can forget have a few drinks when parked up.

That is the Obvious.

But the Minster better forget having a sherry on Saturday night, anyone that might ever get a call out,

and the Doctors, Nurses and all other shift workers

can forget having nights out.

No toasts or drinks at Weddings, Funerals, Christenings or Bar Mitzvah for Drivers.

And?

You might note that I am a rural dweller.

We have no right to drive, therefore we all have to abide by the rules. Now whether we like it or not, if we have to drive 7 days a week then so be it, we don't drink. It might not be pleasant, but tough, neither is being killed or injured by a drunk driver.

Since it is estimated (medically) that an average male removes about 1 unit of alcohol in 4 hours, then it should be possible to at least have a small drink the night before and still be below the limit the next morning.

Most of Europe has been using this lower limit for many years, and I certainly haven't seen it stop the French from enjoying a LITTLE tipple. And there-in perhaps lies one of the problems, as a lot of the UK population doesn't seem able to go out for "just the one".

And now I'm off to open a bottle of Rose and cook dinner.

Been having a look around and this one seems to be the only one accurate enough. I had been considering buying one to check for driving the next day as I would never drink and drive the same day, even if it was just one but at £94.87 I think that if I need to drive the next day I just won't bother having a drink at all and instead laugh at all the drunks making fools of themselves

MSP has attacked proposals to scrap 24-hour specialist policing cover for Highland roads.

John Finnie said he was aware that from the start of next year, the only round-the-clock road policing unit cover would be based in Glasgow, Motherwell and Edinburgh and they would be tasked with policing the motorway network.

'Specialist Policing',

they will still have the Dudes around and about with loaded guns in their holsters in the Highlands.

& Breathalysers at the ready.

There's a market out there for low very low alcohol beer similar to some U.S. states.Low alcohol wine is allready proving very popular.

With a low limit like this,

there is good reason to just drink no alcohol of any kind if you are going to have to drive.

A market for Non Alcoholic Drinks then.

H20 from the tap being the cheapest.

I'll be honest. I love beer.

But you wont find me out drinking non alcoholic beer. Id rather have a coke or a glass of water.

0% beer just doesnt appeal to me lol.

I cannot for the life of me understand why zero or low alcohol beers have a limited appeal.   That's what I drink all the time, whether I am driving or not.   If I am on holiday, and not driving, then I will ask to sample the local beer out of politeness - when I did that in Costa Rica, the waiter refilled my glass free all evening!  :p

Then again, I learnt to drive in the army.   I had passed my test on "lights" and was learning on the HGV Class 2 "AEC Militants" when a few of us went out on a "bender" on a Sunday night.   Big Mistake!    We had to report sick on Monday morning with the mother of all hangovers, only for the MO to take blood samples and pronounce our unfitness for duty as "self-inflicted" which earned us each a £200 fine (four weeks pay) and 14 days "Rippers" (Restriction of Privileges).   We were blood and urine tested each morning and declared as over the legal limit for driving for three days - that's how long the alcohol from a "bender" can stay in your system for!   I made the decision then and there that alcohol and me were kept separate if there was ever any likelihood of me driving.

That's why the police are right to breathalyse after every accident - even at 8.00 in the morning.

0% beer is just pretty nasty. I did drink it for the last 6 weeks of SWMBOs pregnancy just in case.

No point in drinking it since the shops and pubs like to charge for it like it's the full fat stuff. Less duty = more profit I suppose but not very public spirited.

Well that will be the new limit from this weekend,

and no doubt there will be plenty suspected drivers being stopped to get the point across.

The only safe limit will be no alcohol.

................

On another unrelated point,

The Average Speed Cameras on the A9.

The Press & Journal are reporting there have been Freedom of Information requests on the Number of Speeders caught since they went on,

but the Police Refused the Information.

Some seem to believe the System is not working, & that some Cameras still do not have power to them.

You have to be brave & stupid to go by that though.

I drove down the A9 the other week and to be honest there was no way I could get near the speed limit on an average basis. The trip computer was showing the average as being around 45 by the time we got back from Inverness.

As for the drink I never touch a drop if I'm driving and if I was in any way unsure as to my status the next day I'd not get behind the wheel. The new limit just makes sure that we're all going to be extra careful. I know from firends int he police that they are goign to be out on the lookout for people falling foul of the new limit.

So it come into force today and they where out slapping the tickets :)

Slapping what tickets. Do you mean stopping drivers, brethalysing, and then reporting to the procurator fiscal?
