? DPF issue - no fault codes

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Over the past 12 months I have had numerous what I think may be DPF issues. Car gets used for frequent long journeys. When driving at slow speed and depress the clutch while braking preparing to stop while in second gear the engine will die and the  battery light illuminate. The engine will always start first time. It can happen after a long journey or during a short journey with no pattern. Car has been scanned and shown no fault codes, two well known respected VAG independents have inspected the car and neither have been able to find an issue. It has been suggested to get a DPF delete but with looming DPF inspection regs I am reluctant to do this. It has always been serviced on time with OEM parts / lube oil and has 165,000 km on the clock.  Any ideas what this could be or any one experience similar problems? It has gotten to the stage now where my wife wont drive the car due to it dying on motorway off ramps etc I don't want to start throwing money at this without knowing what direction I am heading in i.e. DPF, egr etc

Thanks,

Alan

as you state this happens at slow speed, has the fuel filter been checked? ,due to an increase in the bio content of diesel now, filters are clogging up with sludge.

at slow  speed the fuel pump is not working as hard, and therefore has trouble pushing the fuel through the blockage

Yes, have had the fuel filter changed and still the same problem persists...Had the injectors replaced nearly 3 years ago as part of the VAG campaign. Could it be an egr fault? What is throwing me (and everyone else) is that it isn't logging any fault codes. It is as if the dpf is regenerating but 'doesnt' go into a high idle mode and then during braking this results in the engine cutting out. It has happened once in third to second gear shift down on the motorway while braking and as soon as I let the clutch up in second the engine restarted under compression.

Mine started doing this after I had the injectors replaced under the VOSA recall.

The local dealer had the car for almost 5 weeks and tried everything. They never fixed it.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with yours, I don't think I have the same problem as yours as I don't have any evidence of diesel in the lube oil and my injectors were replaced a few years ago now/approx. 50,000 km ago, if it is an issue with the injectors I doubt I will have any come back after such a long time period.

What's the ash content of the dpf?

Need to get it scanned again to find out but the last time I checked it was 42% and we carried out a forced regen to see if that would have much impact, I think after forced regen it got it down to 30%

No the ash content, not the soot.

Don't know, I only remember being given one percentage value. Sounds like this is something I need to find out. I take ash cannot be 'burnt off' with a regen and requires the DPF cleaned or replaced if it is a high level?

Yep. Ash is measured in g and 60g is the maximum the dpf can take.

If you can find a 2nd hand DPF even if it's clogged you can get it gutted then delete it from the ECU and have it  fitted.

IF the regs come in in the future that require it to be working then refit the original one.
