Sluggish throttle? Octavia Elegance 2.0 diesel

Featured Replies

As above, a 2006  Octavia Elegance PDA 1968cc, 103kW diesel with a DSG gearbox, no major problems so far, touch wood.

I did about 80 or 90 miles along a motorway yesterday and then stopped at the services for 20 minutes or so. All was fine.

On setting off again, the cruise control didn't work. Turning it off & on had no effect, but that wasn't a major problem.

The car had also lost power, almost no response to the throttle above 60 mph and it was changing down gears to get up quite modest hills. There were no warning lights on, temperature gauge was normal. It was as if the turbo had stopped working or the ECU had gone into 'limp home' mode or something. I went for about 50 miles in this manner and stopped at another motorway services. I had a look around and under the bonnet, but could see nothing amiss.

 I set off again and normal working had been restored. The cruise control worked and the power had been restored.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on with this?

Sounds like clogged up turbo vanes causing your car to go into limp mode.

Shouldn't the 'limp mode' bring on the ECU warning lamp? It wasn't lit, but it does light up with the ignition on before starting.

It might well be that though, it was mentioned in another thread.

no it doesn't, you will need to scan with vcds to identify the cause of the limp mode but it will probably turbo boost pressure related.  There are some very good turbo cleaners such as Archoil that will help to clean your turbo if this is the cause.

Thank you.

I'm just reading up on the turbo vanes on this thread;

It all sounds very similar. It has had an EGR valve replaced and has been driven fairly sedately for 60,000 miles.  I'll have to find a VCDS when I get back home.
