System Restore

Featured Replies

having some probs with my computer. i have done both a virus search and spyware and its clean.

yahoo msgnr just asked if i wanted to update it, i clicked yes and since then its gone made. when i try and log into yahoo mail it comes up that its trying to download a yahoo file. itfails and connot open my email.

i went to system restore and it doesnt have any bold dates for me to select

also it only shows september and wont ket me scroll thru any other months

help pls :(

Was system restore actually turned on? Sounds like it had been turned off before for some reason and not turned on again. Also if you are using windows 2000 Professional, its restore facility didn't really work properly anyway from what I can remember.

the turn off system restore box is uncheck so should be on. also the text below it saying about the disk space to use is at maximum

I have never found system restore to be that reliable anyway so I have always turned it off. Kenny are the definitions of your virus software upto date.

yip, tried avg and ad-aware. computer is running fine and the only issue is my email, for some reason when i log into one email in particular it tries to down load a file and fails. i have another email from the same provider(yahoo) but that logs in fine :(

strange thing is i can log into my email from work just not home.

any ideas why my restore wont give me a restore date? doesnt even let me go back months, just stuck on september

Seems strange. If restore had been turned on, it should have logged your changes (hardware/software) as you went along and given you the option to select roll back dates. It looks like your restore files are missing. These can only be deleted by switching off system restore so i'd guess you have some sort of virus causing havoc. Try the Panda online virus checker for a second opinion.

You still didn't nention which operating system you are using (2000 or XP)

sorry its XP mate, i had to turn it off a while ago and go back a week, but it got put on straight away.

ive tried AVG and Norton and another and all has come up clear :(

Trend housecall is pretty good but it takes a while to download on 56k.

I'm not sure I can help much. My restore points go back to Feb 2005, which is when I switched it off to do a clean-up and the previous ones had all gone when I switched it back on again. Before that, it seems to set restore points fairly frequently (though perhaps with reason), though few and far between now, so I've taken to setting them manually about weekly or so.

I notice you mention AVG firewall and Ad-aware, but not Spybot Search & Destroy, which you can download as freeware from: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

As well as the Panda online scan, there is also TrendMicro's "Housecall" - same sort of thing, where you let it access all the files on your computer to see if it finds any nasties. No harm in running one then the other to see if anything turns up.

Can I suggest that you set a new restore point straight away, first to see if it "takes" and also to ensure that if you make matters worse, you can at least get back to "now".

Regards

Good point, I use Ad-aware & Spybot because one seems to pick up spyware etc that the other doesn't regardless of which you run first.
