Skoda Octavia 3 1.4 TSI 140 HP whining noise at start engine

Featured Replies

Smart money is gonna be on the high pressure pump cause, the starter would make a noise every start no mater what it sounds like but, do get it checked out by the dealers.

  • But most of us who own 1.4 and wrote here said their engine does that aswell. I take it as cars personality.

  • For me seems that it sound like that no matter what. Engine cold or hot. Was -6 degrees outside last week and made same noise. Now its like pluss 10 and still does that. Im already used to it. Don't b

  • in my car it does this sound every time since new & in days when the weather was about 40c and more.

That's what I thought ( I posted on November 24-th ). Now , since I am not a mechanic, but oil engineer, I admit that I can not figure out what happens to that pump, why  the pressure drops in the system in time? I think only a good mechanic, patient and kind  can explain us what is happening. The starter can’t be involved because it hasn’t time to warm between the two starts. That's why I think it is high pressure fuel pump.

Hello,

The latest news about the sound is given by a representative Skoda who says the clutch is to blame because it's undersized . It's hard to believe. I would be interested what some mechanics think about this conclusion?

Hi,

It seems that the source of the noise is finally located. If anyone of you has, or can obtain, the VW TPI 2037299/3 from 17 september 2015, please, be kind and send it to me at e-mail: "[email protected]" Many thanks.

What/where have you found the source to be?

In this TPI:

"Technical background

Flowing noises in the engine oil pump. The flowing noises occur at the oil pressure is built up during the engine start. The flowing noises are particularly pronounced after a long stationary period of the vehicle."

"The flowing noises occur at the oil pressure is built up during the engine start and are particularly pronounced after a long stationary period of the vehicle. The noises are construction-related and normal. There is no parts damage."

So that is the source of the noise.

What I need is the Official Document TPI, if anyone has it, or can provide it.

Is anyone anywhere actually saying this is harmful rather than just an odd and mildly annoying characteristic of certain vehicles?

My Octavia (2014 1.4TSI manual estate) makes the noise when starting from cold but not when it's warm.  It's done so throughout the 11 months I've owned it and I've never given it a second thought - it's just something the car does.  Am I being dangerously complacent or can I safely continue to ignore it?

Your 12 month service will be coming up shortly, seems like a reasonable question to ask then.

Mine's the same, always only on first cold start-up of the day - yesterday's first service made no difference (and it was all thoroughly tested I believe)

Actually the car was serviced in April.  Although I've owned it for 11 months it was ex-Skoda fleet and 7 months old when I bought it.  I never mentioned the noise to the garage and they didn't flag anything up to me.  I intend to go on ignoring the noise unless and until somebody tells me it's harmful.  At the moment there seems to be a strong balance of opinion that it isn't.

Hi all,

My 2013 1.4 tsi Octavia also makes this exact noise since i bought it back in march this year. It has covered 27k miles. It has standard used 1 year warranty so i want to get it checked out but wondered if anyone knows what this is yet?

Thanks

My car is making the same sound from day one. Never bothered me.

Ditto, mines exactly the same. It's a bit disconcerting though.

Hi ,

One month ago, I bought a Skoda Octavia 1.4 TSI 140 HP  and since then, every morning  when I start the engine or when the engine is cold, I hear a strange(whining) noise . I searched the forums in my country for people who have the same problem and I found only three guys only, having no solution for that. So, I thought to try the forums from other countries, maybe I find problem solving. Attached the recording with noise at startup:

(I found it on youtube, the sound is identical)

I can not hear any abnormal noise at all. I just hear a quiet engine starting up normally.

What am I missing?

Very short noise at 0,03 sec. But that is "a normal sound" as the TPI concludes. I can live with it.

The wifes previous Nissan Micra made exactly the same noise and did it mostly on a cold start. When warm it rarely did it.  We asked the dealer about it (car was 7 years old by this time so well out of warranty) and said it was pretty common and at the owners request had changed the starters on some cars to cure it (which it had). But he added that they had yet to see a starter fail so I left it well alone.

When we sold the car I told the chap who came to view it about the noise and when I started it the noise was there. He was not bothered at all. Said his previous Micra made the exact same noise, never failed to start so he just presumed it was normal.

So based on my experience its not really normal since our Micra did not do it from day one but its pretty common and does not seem to cause any other problems.

But my Leon 1.4 TSi did not do it and neither does the Superb 1.4 TSi.

The original  post mentions a whining noise. A tiny momentary click is something else.
