Brakes...options for discs and pads and self fitting

Featured Replies

Just had my local garage service my VRS estate which is only in it's second week with me.

When buying the car I was aware that it needed cam belt and water pump which are being done today and there was an advisory on the discs and pads all round from the last MOT. Garage has advised they will need doing sooner rather than later now, but I want to keep the cost to a miminum.

My garage will let me buy and supply so what options do I have when it comes to replacement discs and pads. I'm not too fussed about out and out performance upgrades, I've had EBC greenstuff on cars in the past but if OE or off the shelf is sufficient then I'm fine with that.

Just thought I'd check to see what other people have gone for.

Also, if it comes down to it, what are peoples experiences with replacing discs and pads themselves on the pre FL estates, or hatches for that matter?

I'm on pagid discs and ebc redstuff pads. Happy with this setup.

Greenstuff better suited to lighter cars tbh.

www.eurocarparts.com or www.carparts4less.co.uk usually competitive on price for discs. Always reliable for delivery.

Someone will come on saying they got theirs from eBay for a fiver, I prefer risk free sale with the above.

Pads from www.brakes4u.co.uk. will try and look out what discount code I used.

I fitted Pagid discs & pads all round from euro carparts on my octavia vrs, happy with them, seem good quality & work fine, easy to fit(im a mechanic though)you will need a piston wind back tool to fit the rears. .

another one for pagid discs and ebc redstuff pads (if you are after a upgrade)

as for fitting the front ones are straight forward to do but the rear caliper carriers are a pain to remove due to restricted access and super tight spline bolts

Where is best to get the fabled wind back tool from?

My rears have just started to squeak, i have no knowledge of previous replacements so want to do both discs and pads at the back.

You can also try a local motor factor which will probably be slightly more expensive than online but you can always exchange them immediately if the wrong parts are supplied.

If you want you can wind back the rear pistons with a large pair of pipe grips, hold them the correct way and be careful to grip only the exposed metal and not nip the dust seal, bit by bit you'll wind it back.

I used MTEC Brakes and bought drilled and groved protection coated discs with EBC Green stuff front and Mintex rear, I fitted them myself last year with no trouble at all! Cost less than £200 for all four corners.

It's all down to your driving style. If you can boil brake fluid in no time. Go for sport discs and Ferodo pads. EBC yellow stuff are most likely same.

I am looking for experience with EBC GD Sport discs or BSD discs because I've got big problems with brakes overheating. ATM, I don't want to spend 3000€ for proper brake system. Just reasonable upgrade

I changed the discs/pads/callipers on my 1.8T 4x4 for the bigger vRS size (when I had it some years ago). Stopped on a tanner!

The 4x4 was more or less all singing all dancing so needed stopping power improvements.

If you've not done major changes to the car, stick with OEM stuff, you'll be squids in mate.

I needed to have my front discs and pads replaced earlier this year and the best price I found for OE replacements was from Trade Parts Specialists;

http://www.thetradepartsspecialists.co.uk/

Before discounts the price was over £200, but I paid £118.75 including VAT for two discs and a set of front pads.

I managed to get the rear discs off the octavia and golf without removing the caliper carriers. Obviously the calipers had been removed to gain access.

Given the rear discs had been on for 150k plus. They were a pig to get off as they had rusted to the hub. They came loose easy enough but I could not squeeze them out past the hub and the carrier. On the golf with fresh looking disks after 50k of driving from new. They just slid off. Not sure if all octavia's lend themselves to this option. Maybe VRS are different. +1 for the brake wind back tool. Worthwhile investment if you plan to do your own brakes.

TPS for me everytime OEM parts. Fit first time.

The disc retaining screws can be a pain to unscrew and it is worth having a cold chisel and hammer to hand when you do it to ensure the right appliance of science is available if you need it. I also bought new screws beforehand (and needed them).

use an universal tool - a hammer. Bang it on the screw and use WD40 - it usually goes off. Or just drill out the head of screw - then unscrew is easy.

I always use copper grease to avoid rust due heavy breaking temperatures

Last year I replaced my front discs and pads. I bought the parts from tps, and were cheaper than pagids or any others.
