vRS - scrap or breakers?

Featured Replies

I recently had an accident in my black '51 plate vRS, a nearside front collision that's ended up smooshing the intercooler (but didn't puncture it!), bending the steering hub, and pushing the suspension top mount in a reasonable amount. The nearside front wing and front bumper are obviously also pretty wonky!

The age and condition of the car, and the cost of repairs, meant I replaced it, so now I'm wondering what to do. The car's still drivable, if that helps anyone give me advice.

Condition wise it's "alright". The interior I never really looked after too fastidiously (pair of small dogs in the family, never cared too much about covering the seats) and the exterior is good bar the smooshed bits. It went through its MOT only a few weeks before, including four new Dunlops. The impact hasn't damaged the front nearside wheel that I can tell, but it's obviously a bit scratched up.

So I'm now wondering if I should insure it for a day and drive it to a specialist breakers, outright scrap it (least hassle!) or stick it up on the forums here and see if anyone wants to come and take it away.

One of the guys at my local garage offered me £450 for it as-is, to break (they're VAG nuts, so had plenty of cars to donate parts to), but he can't take it on now. Is that a reasonable sum to ask for on the forums? I'm willing to knock that down a reasonable amount if someone can just come and take it away quickly.

Cheers for any and all advice!

£450 is probably fair but you should really join freedom (see "shop" above) if you plan to sell it,

A few keys part on these cars are worth good money - OK, sounds like you've totalled one of them - the front bumper, but with a little effort put in with the ratchet you could extract front brakes (£150) rear brakes (£90) Turbo (£150) Wheels (£200) Seats & Doorcards (£150-£200) and some other bits and pieces and then just get local scrap collection to come get it.

All depends if you have somewhere to temporarily stand car for a while whilst you get bits off it (and store them).  If you go down that route, ensure you SORN it.

I'd be interested in wheels and tyres :)

Sorry to hear about the smash. Similar situation to me though mine isn't as badly damaged and I'm getting it repaired.

If you have the time/space you'll get more by selling bits off it yourself but otherwise £450 seems like quite a good offer from a garage.

Perfect colour ill be intrested in drivers rear door
