Gearbox whine

Featured Replies

I posted up quite a while ago about my car pulling extremely hard to the left when accelerating hard a bit like really bad torque steer, tracking camber etc has been checked several times and it's all spot on. The car drives perfectly straight until you plant it and then it's as if the diff is sending all the power to one wheel. I thought it might be a worn engine mount as it was showing signs of wear so I replaced it for the vibratechnics alternative and it hasn't made any difference.

Now a whine has appeared from the gearbox in second and third gear on light throttle, anyone have any ideas on what it could be? I'm starting to think the diff could be responsible. Any help appreciated cheers

I've got a whine between 1700 & 2100 in second on light throttle also, had it since day one I reckon. No drastic pull left for me.

Should we be concerned?

I'm a bit reluctant to increase the power, sort the clutch and put an LSD in ..... :p

Have you got a limited slip diff?

If not it will only send the power to one wheel?

no it's not got an lsd in lol I don't think anyone will understand how bad it is until they have driven it or been in it :/

i know this may sound abit strange but how are your tyre pressures?

I know exactly what you mean. If I pulled away put it in second and planted it, it would be like a emergency swerve to the left.

Turned out to be my coilovers (had JOMS at the time) gave too much camber on the left side. Put my standard setup back on got it tracked up again and it was fine.

That don't really help with your issue but just thought I would say what mine did lol.

Will be interested to know what the problem is.

I check my pressures at least once a week mate and they're always fine.

I can't see it being My AP Coilovers to be fair mate as like I say the tracking and camber is always spot on when I've had it checked. Bit of a wierd one think I might have to take it to a specialist see what they think.

A whine in gears like that can indicate a problem with the gearbox.

We had one that appeared in 1st and 2nd on our old Cordoba PD130... the bearings failed in the gearbox.

Are the changes notchy or grinding?

there not Phil no, feels like when I first bought the car. If the diff was starting to fail do you think this could be the cause of the pulling to the left when accelerating or could it be down to top mounts or something suspension wise?

How long has it been pulling to the left?

check the subframe/console alignment hasn't move on the body chassis, i had same issue car always pulling to the left, i changed everything and eventually looked and the alloy console on the passenger side it had shift rearwards about 3-4mm, the bolt where all tight and took a breaker bar to remove, fitted new alloy console and new bolts made sure it was aligned back to old position and hey presto no more pulling to the left anymore

Quite a while now Danny just don't really notice it as I never plant it limb low gears unless on track but I know it's still there lol.

It's got powerflex consol bushes in it, did yours pull to the left all the time?

Only when I had the coilovers on. It had visible camber on the passenger side front
