Help! Changing Rear Pads/discs

Featured Replies

Hi All, just changing the rear pads and discs on my 59 plate Octavia VRS.

After getting the correct pads (2nd time lucky) and a set of VAG spline bits (how much??) I have replace the drivers side, all done.

Passenger side still in bits as the caliper won't wind in. It's turning (clockwise, same as the drivers side) but it's just not going back in.

What am I doing wrong? Any tips / suggestions (to try tomorrow when it's light).

Cheers

Paul

Are you using a windback tool or just turning it? You have to push it back in as well as turning hence why a proper tool is available.

Cheers, think that was where I was going wrong, proper rewind tool and managed to fit all in the driver's side but the caliper further out on passenger side so was a tight fit getting the plate in place so was just turning, not turning and pushing. Problem solved.

If the piston/seals/caliper bore are in good condition, in my experience you don't need the backplate on the wind back tool to get the piston fully seated, in fact I find it just gets in the way and prefer to just use hand pressure on the tool to get it started then if everything's good and lubed it's as easy as turning a door knob.

Once the backplate was back in place all was good, both sides now complete and bedded in.

I did have to drill out the locator screw on the disc though after it rounded off, have ordered some more screws and some screw extractor bits, will get round to putting a new screw in sometime, no rush.
