Laying loft floor

No more nails

That stuff would create a bond stronger than the chipboard. If you pulled apart two boards stuck with it' date=' the boards would disintegrate along the join, IMHO.[/quote']

Yes, I'd agree it would do that. It would be a "permanent solution", even using MDF or hardboard.

However, it wouldn't creak, which was why I was suggesting it...if creakiness isn't an issue, there'd be no point in doing it... :)

I used Plywood in mine, I think it was about 12 mm think and held it in place with screws. It was handy cos they were 8X4 ft sheets cut into 8X2 (also you can lift just a particular section if you want). It does squeek a bit at times when walking but its just for storage so ain't a problem. We had to make little slots in the joists so not to pinch the electrical cables.

Another idea maybe to mark the wood when putting it down to show where electrical cables are going over the joists to ensure you don't screw though a cable.

The tongue and groove joint is all that you need to ensure a good transfer of loads and stop creaking from the boards (that why it is there). If it still creaks it will be from the joists rather than the boards.

By the way MUST use gold screws - so much nicer against the chipboard :):)

Re creaking' date=' didn't they previously put some sort of felt over the joists to prevent rubbing? Not sure about this now cos there are bound to be new regs on specific materials (fireproofing etc).

Never seen it or heard of that. If boards are properly fixed (nailed or screwed) they should not rub. Seen noise reducing material used between boards and joists to help stop noise such as footsteps between flats - never done it myself but think it is a bit specialist (and not needed if it is only the loft)
