Boost oddity or fly be wire characteristic?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

A question regarding my car (Octy 2002 4x4 1.8T) and the acceleration/boost it shows at different throttle positions.

I have noticed this from day one of picking the car up but yesterday I did my first big journey in it (a 400 mile round trip) and had a chance to 'experiment' a little more.

My query is; my cars power delivery doesn't seem directly linked to the position of the accelerator pedal. What I mean by that is that the car seems to pull just as hard at one third throttle on the motorway as it does all the way to the floor! If you go to W.O.T and then back off by half or so then the car seems to pick up just a little more which feels weird but I pretty much got used to it yesterday.

So is this a characteristic of the fly by wire system (which I have never had on a car before, so am not very knowledgeable on the subject) or is my car knackered in some way? :P :( It seems like the setup gives good advantages ie good (almost) instant throttle response with just a touch of the accelerator but surely the power should keep on coming in strong until the car is flat out? I know the boost holds well but you'd surely also have peak power high up the rev range (5,600rpm at a guess?)

A final characteristic I have felt is that the turbo almost seems to stall (thats over exagerated but the only way I could think to describe it!) when the accelerator pedal comes up to a certain point, providing a slight engine braking effect.

Mods wise Im currently running a Forge 007p Recirc valve and a K&N panel filter.

Thanks for any help in advance

From what I recall with my octy it was possible to drive the car totally off boost by being gentle with the throttle. From 2,500rpm upwards you could here the turbo spinning but it was very quiet till you applied WOT. It is possible to have a remap that uses the full potential of the engine untill you ease back at the required speed.

Basically mine drove like any other car, except that from 2,500 rpm on wot you got pushed back into the seat. Otherwise it was a gentle and progressive accelleration.

Is your car new or used? maybe its been remapped but you dont know it.

mine very similar mate and mine's been re-mapped

Ah, many many thanks guys. I should have mentioned that it has had a remap! DOH. I thought that the remap would simply keep the original torque and power characteristics but in a heightened form. I guess that more boost has been shoved through the turbo to get the figures so it now isnt as smooth as a standard car. This all makes good sense now. :)

The car put out 190bhp/209lb/ft torque on a very warm day a few weeks ago. I'll be doing the FMIC and turbo pipes next and then getting a re re map (I think thats the right way to say it!) running around 1 bar of boost. My guess is its currently running around .85, maybe .9 I dont want to give that small K03s too much to handle.

Cheers for the prompt replies. :)

Try a throttle body reset, may not cure it but will probably make it less noticeable and a lot smoother.
