Odd one with oil light?

Featured Replies

Wondering if anyone can shed any light on this, or experienced before?

Got in my car tonight after work, turned key, high pitch I guess, warning chime.. Oil light on. So didn't start her. (Vrs tdi CR) checked oil level, yes was lower end.. But not to low!

OK I thought, drive to petrol station, top up, not ideal but 35miles from home. Anyway, start engine, no oil light... Not till station, and not since.

Checked level at station... Bang spot on! I've nipped out on few errands tonight, checked 3 times, no light, level fine.

Only thing in back of my mind, new turbo 500miles ago.... But can't smell burning, no leaks? But then oil level fine anyway!

I could say oh well... Very odd? But things happen for a reason..... Don't they??

Any thoughts?

Cheers peeps!

Mike

When you said 'oil light'- was it the oil level light or the oil pressure light? They are separate lights.

I had the oil level light illuminate in heavy traffic going past Heathrow Airport. Once I'd established with SWMBO and the owners manual that it was oil level, we carried on slowly to the first service station on the M1. Very expensive oil ~£20 for a litre of VW spec. But subsequently when cold again I was way over full. So I think a false alarm.

Did have a replacement turbo under warranty at ~ 30,000 miles , but I am afraid I can not remember if the incident was before or after that. Now done over 75,000 miles all seems to be well.

Hi, red oil can symbol.... I think that's oil isn't it? Not done it since in 50miles... Did it from a cold start.. Very unsure?

As above, if the oil light is on but you haven't started her up, it can't be pressure related as it won't have generated any at that point.

Need to be clear if it's "oil level" or "oil pressure" light you had lit?

I think is oil pressure then? Just googled it.. Red oil can symbol?

But yes... Did it when turned ignition on... Before I started it! Once I'd started it.... It's stopped and went out?

It's supposed to light up when the ignition is on, then it should go out immediately once engine is started. If it lights up with engine running you need to worry! Lol

Hmmm... So that was a coinsidance I've not spotted on noticed before perhaps?

Wonder what the high pitch beep/buzz was?

The plot thickens..

Thanks guys

Mike

The old mantra of engine cold transmission hot isn't a bad one to stick to. I dip my oil when I check tyre pressures - which also should be done cold.

Do mine every couple of weeks being a paranoid tsi owner (not that it uses anything to talk about)

Maybe a coincidence that you just not noticed, there are several lights that come on with the ignition to be fair.

So I wonder if the beep/buzz you heard was just the fuel pump priming the system? Is the car new to you?

Just keep an eye on your fluid levels ( the car, not you ) and report back if there is a problem.
