Reminder - Check your tyre pressures

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Just checked my tyre pressures (not done for a little while admittedly) and obviously with the cold weather they had all dropped by some margin

Just giving you a reminder to check your own

Indeed.

Just checked mine and added air to the fronts at the weekend, as they looked a bit low. Forgot to press the TPMS button tho...

I'm a bit undecided about tyre pressures. Going back to school physics ... no stay with me;

PV is proportional to T

P is pressure; V is volume; T is temperature.

As the volume is constant the pressure is proportional to temperature, as the temperature drops so will tyre pressures.

If you chech the pressures (as always recommended) when they are cold then they will always be lower in the winter.

I'm always suprised that pressures are not quoted at a 'standard' temperature. I check mine weekly so I can confirm that as temperatures drop so will the pressure. I'm jsy not sure what changes can be expected for, say, a 5 degree temp difference.

I presume the temp rising as the car is driven will increase the pressure but without doing a F1 pitstop temp/pressure check I don't know what pressure could be expected during 'normal' driving conditions.

The vast majority if not all car owners would have problems only checking tyre pressures when the car is at sea level, the atmospheric pressure is 1013.25 hPa, and ambient temperature is 15 degrees Celsius. JMTPW. ;)
