locking and interior light issue

Featured Replies

Hi all have just got a mk1 vrs and have a couple of annoying little issues.

1 central locking dosent operate on the rear passenger door

2 interior light is on permanantly when switched to door open setting even if you open and close door lock it or put ignition on

+ on my list of other bits i have found the key dosent open the drivers door which i can live with may just need lube as probably not ever used + the rear drivers door is quite stiff to open takes a couple of tugs on the handle probably for the same reason so will lube that too

The drivers window is tempramental and graunchy but have orderd a new mechanisim £21.90 off the bay as i recon its best to do before it gets stuck (normally in the down position)

The audio gear is junk as the cones are split on 3 of the speakers but i have some lying around to put in it

Also could do with a service as its coming up for 7k since the last one i know the book states 10k but have heard that 5/6k is recomended on the 1.8t

So iv'e got a nice little list built up that should keep me a bit busy this weekend :-)

well i realised i had a couple more faults when i took a proper look ie

alarm not arming

puddle light not working

door open not working

no headlights on warning buzzer

so thought that it probably needed a drivers door lock mech to which i have now fitted but still have the interior light on all the time and have realised the alarm isnt arming could it be the rear lock mechanism causing it or am i looking more allong the ccm route being the cause of that ??

Anyway the list has been taken down a bit as i have fitted

winder mechanism

lock mechanism

front and rear speakers

unstuck the rear drivers door latch

found the cause of the lock on drivers not working it has the wrong barrel fitted which i broke anyway changing the door mech the hamfisted way

Still to do

oil change

rear door lock

possibly ccm or something else if the rear lock dosent sort the alarm and interior light issue

Are you sure you definitely have the alarm option fitted, as most vrs's only came with immobiliser?.

This is a popular subject at the moment, especially with the cold damp weather.

Sounds like you need to get into your drivers door and inspect

a) the wiring loom

B) multiplug that goes into your window motor

c) wiring from door through the A pillar in the rubber jonny

One of these could be responsible for your lighting issues

For your rear door this could just be a sticky lock pin mech, get into the door to lube it up, check my how to inspect your multiplug thread currently running. Sounds like a good lube of your catches is needed round most of the car, including your drivers door as you say.

I'm no sparky so cant say too much about alarm/ interior light, but by the sounds of it you've got moisture hanging around in your doors and possibly amongst your wiring that could be causing corrosion in a few areas. When you check your multiplug you may find broken pins and/or broken/corroded wires so if you have a multi meter that would come in very handy. There are threads on broken pins too. In my intermittent Central locking problem thread recently a few links and great advice popped up.

I still have a door/interior light/lights on buzzer intermittent issue, but having checked things noted above I can pretty much rule out corrosion. Next I think I need a vcds scan and multi meter to pin point weak signals.

Now you mention it I've never heard my alarm haha. Anyway, wouldn't it also be that if a door isn't locked ie the rear door, the alarm wont arm anyway?

Hadnt thought that it wouldnt have an alarm i do have a little led light just in front of the drivers door pin so assumed it had one is that not right.

Either way it dosent flash atall when locked.

Checked the plug while i was in there doing the lock and winder all seemed good havent looked in any of the other doors yet tho

I have orderd another lock mech for the rear door off ebay and will give it a crack couldnt see anything wrong with the wiring to the rear door but suppose i should have got the meter out to check it first ho hum hindsight and all that jazz lol

Will fit and see what the score is after if nothing else it will hopefully get the c/l up and running again, if it dosent fix all the issues i will do a little more investigation on the multiplugs and wiring

If there's an led by the pin there it should flash I guess? Rear door could also be down to needing the catch and springs lubricating, but if its too far gone you'll be needing that lock mech anyway. I'm in a similar position, although I've not tested with multimeter inside the doors, loom and pillar wires all look good, but my interior light, lights buzzer and door light are intermittent to non existent with the door opening, I'm thinking microswitch in the lock mech, will try wd40 on that, failing that I have a used drivers door mech to try. Will get a multimeter as well just in case it runs deeper having realised how cheap they are!

My front passenger has done ok since I lubed it, but then that was intermittent albeit more regularly not working in this weather, so I've still got my fingers crossed. Not looking forward to fitting lock mech so hopefully wd40 will give the switches a kick up the arse.

The led on the door flashes to either tell you that the deadlocking and immobiliser is set or that you have an error - no flash, or that the car has locked but not deadlocked.. Only a very few people have Skoda alarms on the car as they were able to be ordered at point of build on the new car from the factory.

Most aftermarket alarms are immediately obvious as they have an extra fob or electronic key where the oem alarm uses the standard fob

Lock mech isnt that bad tbh i had issues as i didnt have a torx long enough to remove the lock barrel to get the cable for the handle released and i also bust the back part of the lock barrel trying to get it off from behind but it would be a relatively easy job with a long torx bit will pick some up before i do the rear lock.

In my case im not even sure if all my poblems are linked to it and probably a few other easy bits i should have checked first but tbh its only £20 and around an hour to do so if it sorts it happy days !!! fit n forget job done

If you have checked the other easy bits and think you have intermittent issues with your lock i recon just dive in and replace hopefully it fixes it permanantly which is probably better than having to fiddle around with it every time it stops.

Ohhh probably got a deadlocking/imobilisor error then as mine doesnt flash still wonder if the problem could be linked to the rear lock.

Will find out for sure at the weekend when i get the lock in there

The drivers door unit should control the led, are you sure the led cable has not come disconnected?, real easy to do when trying to balance all getting the card back on. You could try disconnecting the affected door wiring at the b post connector to see if your interior lamp goes out, if so you've narrowed down the fault to that door.

Have you had a code scan done on the car yet?, as certain codes can be a dead giveaway to water/corrosion ingress.

I feel for you as it as a real pain in the **** trying to do it this time of year. To be honest, if you get the door lock to work consistently with the wd40 method you should regard that as dodging a bullet in winter, and fix it on a nice warm summer day with a new unit.

Hadnt thought to disconnect then try will fit the rear then look at wiring after :-)

ive bought it so may aswell get it in now

Finally got the chance to get the rear pass lock in so got my locking back on that door now and the red light is flashing on the drivers door again ☺

still have issues tho the interior light still stays on in door open position and the dash door open light doesn't work on that door

Tried unplugging the loom and trying but still not working so guess that means the issue is elsewhere Ho hum may live with it for the mo

Could well be a broken wire in that door loom, or a cruddy connection, will mean getting busy with a meter yourself or finding somebody to help you who has one if the job is a little too far from your personal comfort zone with electrics.

Have you had the car scanned for codes with VCDS at all yet?, as that may be a big help to you.

  • Author

Yeah unplugged Pulled it through and inspected it couldn't find any break in the cable but ran out of time so just boshed it back together

Next step vcds scan see where I'm looking then grab the meter I recon ☺

  • Author

Not sure how or why but interior light is now working so I have a self repairing car ☺

probably some damp getting in somewhere needs a touch of investigation before it becomes an issue I recon

The plot thickens, my interior now works more often but the door light is now very rarely. I've yet to try my used lock mech/microswitch. Passenger door still going ok though. Hope you get it sorted.

indeed it does the rear door put the open symbol up on the dash last night but it isnt doing it again today

its got to be a dodgy connection or moisture somwhere so i will have to investigate before it causes any more issues but i will leave it for now untill i get a decent day to go out and tackle it as i dont fancy getting caught out by the weather and having to drive around in a half dissasembled car......again

How are you getting on? Touch wood it looks as though I've solved mine. Finally got round to fitting used lock mech, door light on, interior light on, lights on buzzer all operative with door, passenger door still holding up after serious lubrication. Hope it lasts!

All good just got the intermittent door open symbol from the rear passenger door which I will probably leave for a couple of months now as it's not a big issue

Recon i will pull all the doorcards for investigation and waterproofing when the weather brightens up a bit :-)

Cool, yeah I've got a couple of other jobs to do but they're just dragging on because of the weather, starting to do my head in now. Still, it will brighten up soon...
