Columbus advice please

Featured Replies

I've had a quick scan around and not managed to find easy answers to my questions.

I'm considering a columbus for my 57reg octavia ambiente estate, but before coughing up my hard earned cash want to be sure its what I'm after:

When buying a columbus (from ebay in all liklihood), will I need a specific size/ shape/ model number, or are they all compatible?

Are they compatible with an iphone 5s for bluetooth, and siri voice activation? I read about some bluetooth module that needs to be bought as an add on?

How do you update the maps and software? Is it free? If not, whats the cost, ish?

Thanks   = )

All Columbus units (except for the ones in the latest generation Skoda cars) are the same shape and size. Model numbers change with the newer features of the unit and hardware specifications, so the later the model number and suffix letter indicate the better (newer) units.

Bluetooth is an add on for the car, not for the head unit, but the do communicate with each other. iphone compatibility, I have no idea. There are much better mobiles on the market in my opinion. However, an aftermarket bluetooth kit such as a Fiscon unit will be all phone compatible.

I have a Columbus in the for sale section, and it's fully up to date with maps and software, and only a year old.

I've tried to find your ad but cant see it :(

Only for another for £400

All Columbus units (except those for the Mk3 Octavia are the same size.

Units ending in 686 have DAB.

Don't go for one ending in 680 unless there is a suffix letter after it or you are tight on money.

I'll be selling mine shortly. That's a 3T0...680 A with 4020 firmware & v.9 maps. Has been updated by me several times without issue.

That's in the for sale section as well.

Along with a fascia which might be right for your car and a CAN gateway which you might need if yours isn't new enough.

To get music off an iPhone you'll need a compatible BT module (HFP as iPhones don't support rSAP) or MDI. I'd go with the latter unless phone calls is important for you.

Why dont go for one ending in 680 mate? Whats the difference?

Are they the old ones? Or?

680 is the first generation. After that they started putting letters after the 680 number to signify hardware & software improvements. (in a nutshell)

680 with no suffix are older units with limited upgrade potential and older technology.

You can save a bit of cash, use a modified firmware and still get 7-digit postcodes and v.9 maps and have something not much different to the newer (post-2010) units.

The only real bonus of later units is a 40Gb HD as opposed to a 30Gb one.

Cheers fella

Will bear that in mind :).
