Spare Wheel (Lesson Learnt)

Featured Replies

Having had my Octavia since may i was fully aware that they come without a spare wheel and in its place a can of gunk and air compressor. In 30 years i think Ive had 2 punctures in total so was waiting to pick up either a bargain alloy or steel wheel at a later date. At 2am this morning i got a puncture so i thought no panic i will use the gunk and away we go. How wrong i was. Full bottle of gunk in the tyre and nothing but a load of mess and still a flat tyre. Fortunately skoda assist were fantastic and my car has been recovered awaiting a new tyre.  Major lesson learnt . Unbelievable that it doesn't even come with a space saver considering my MK1 Octavia VRS had a full size alloy wheel.

Gunk = junk

I serached ebay for a spare alloy - got one for £35 and had it refurbished.  New tyre fitted to it last week.  Worth the cost for peace of mind and I can always transfer it to the next one or sell it separately.  Gunk and pump consigned to the back of the garage!

Can the compressors be used like a normal after market tyre inflation compressor if you need to check your tyre pressures?

Yes, gauge is a bit iffy but does a job.

Gunk will seal a "nail in tread" puncture but no way will it fix a cut wall.

So the gunk is good for a slow puncture which most of us would just manage with a pump anyway until we got it changed.

But no use for a blow out when you actually urgently need a new tyre FFS.

Might as well ditch the gunk and save another kg

I wouldn't be without the full size spare wheel in the boot!

Gunk is not good. Even if it does work on the tyre you can only drive so fast and so far before having to have the tyre changed anyway.

And the other problem with the gunk is once it's used in the tyre you need to replace the tyre even if it would have been repairable.
