Clicking (or ticking) sound when steering on full lock & wheels rotating. Any ideas?

Featured Replies

Only noticed it today but when I have the steering on full lock and I either move forward or backwards (ie. wheels are rotating) there is a audible clicking/ticking sound - it's not particularly loud but certainly not silent as it was before.

It doesn't make any sound when on full lock and the car is stationary.

The car has hit 82k miles and the only consideration out of the norm - is that I've done a lot mileage recently in rural areas - muddy and rutted roads predominately, certainly not smooth motorway mileage. I would certainly say the underside of the car has seen plenty of mud.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like CV joints starting to go, probably due to CV boot coming loose/splitting allowing muck in to the workings.

When they start to bang and hammer is the time to worry!

As per what MicMac said from your symptoms it could be a worn cv joint.

Cheers for the response. Not going to the stealers to get it done for obvious reasons - I'll go to my local independent. How much to replace?? I appreciate this is based on whether it's the outer or inner CV joint but more likely it's the outer?? Just want to be prepped before I enter into discussions with garage etc??

No idea re cost, probably a 1/2 hour job per side.

It may not be the CV joint(s) though...

Have you visually checked for twigs etc wedged in the bodywork somewhere that catch the wheel(s)/tyre(s)?

That was precisely the symptoms when the CV joints went on my last car (2005 Honda Civic Type-S) at 70K miles due to split covers and the ingress of water and general muck. Cost me just under £300 to have both replaced.

Classic symptoms for CV joints.

I guess a look online will give you ideas how much they cost.   ECP have them for between £30 and £70 dependant of model/year.

Its usually the outer, but the inner is not totally immune.

As mentioned, faint possibility of something loose catching.

Even i have got same issue. where can i source it online? any links that you guys suggest?
