Disposing of old engine coolant

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Going to be doing a change of engine coolant on my Fiesta over Christmas, but unsure what to do with the old coolant. Obviously I can't pour it down the drain, and the local recycling centre only take used engine oil. Not sure I want to chuck bottles of it into general waste.

So my question is, what have you guys done in the past? I wonder if a local garage would sort it out for a small charge?

Regards,

Matt

Take it to your local garage :)

I thought that might be the answer. Makes most sense to me.

Thank you :)

Your local council tip might take it too, depending on what their recycling policy is.

I had the same thought, but they don't list it on their website.

I have emailed the council anyway to ask what they think, so we'll see.

Just as an update, had a reply from the council:

Dear Mr B,

Ref: 600277

Thank you for your enquiry.

I have spoken to waste management who advise engine coolant will not be accepted at the recycling centres.

Taking the coolant to your local garage to dispose of seems to be the best advice.

If you have any further enquiries please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours sincerely,

So even the council recommend taking it to a garage, guess that's what I'll do then!

I just chuck it in with the waste oil.

When I looked into this previously the general consensus was as long as you're connected to mains sewerage then the most effective way of disposing of coolant was flushing it down the toilet with plenty of water to dilute it. Unlike oil it doesn't survive going through a sewerage system.

Yep that's pretty much the conclusion I drew. Though I don't bother with plenty of water... just flush it down the bog, it will be plenty diluted with **** and **** by the time it reaches the treatment plant :)

PS. Don't put it in surface drains as depending on your sewerage setup these could lead to a local soak-away or a river...
