Engine temp and Fuel gauge needle dials

Last night whilst driving home I noticed that the needles on my engine temp and fuel gauges had no lights shown. All other dash lights were working as normal. I did notice that the needle dials just mentioned flickered on briefly after I started paying attention to it. 

I did a search on the forum and a solution was found with a specialist company but the company was based in the south of England  and I am in Scotland.

Anyone care to offer any possible solutions for this problem?
