1.9 TD Turbo failing

Featured Replies

This evening while driving home, travelling up hill at about 2500rpm the car suffered a lack of power, it became apparent that there was no turbo assistance.

This continued all the way home and then I jumped on here for a look. One thread which I cannot find again, said that in some cases the problem will rectify after ignition cycling.

Half an hour later I nipped out to buy some electrical cleaner for the MAF valve (shop shut :-() and the turbo seems to be be working normally.

The problem is I cannot remember with which fault this happens. Will brake cleaner do the same job or will it be too corrosive on the MAF valve?

I'm thinking that the fact it worked ok after a short break rules out vacuum issues altogether? Also I had no smoke or any other problems, just lack of power.

I've not long ago changed the temp sensor on our fabia and it seemed to cure a raft of problems.

Any pointers would be gratefully received.

Many thanks.

It's the veins in the turbo sticking causing an over boost.

Tried the MM yesterday following the instructions on here. All good and no problems.

While "ringing out" the car afterwards it hit limp mode again and engine management came on. I took it home, cleaned out the EGR and MAF and now seems ok. Light has also gone out.

Time will tell but what a difference in performance, no lag and it's ready to go all the time. A couple of hours well spent indeed.

good stuff!!!

You cleaned out the manifold and egr valve as well ?

EGR and MAF. EGR was ridiculously clogged with tarry deposits. Probably had nothing to do with limp mode at high revs but the deposits certainly weren't helping anything. Took about an hour of contact cleaner/MM/degreaser and a brush to clear it. The MAF would never have been cleaned since new (120k). Could not get the MAF out due to anti tamper torx but gave it a good soaking with contact cleaner from any angle I could reach.
