Fabia II glove box light plunger switch access

Featured Replies

Apologies if this has already been covered but I couldn’t find it in a search.

Fabia II, 2010, 1.2SE TSi, RH drive.

I needed to get to the switch for the glove box light which was not switching off.  The switch is buried within the fascia to the right side of the glove box (as viewed from the passenger’s seat).

  1. To make visibility easier remove the upper lidded glove box.  Two torx screws adjacent to the upper hinge line.  There are also some clips along the lower edge which release when the box is pulled towards you.
  2. Remove the plastic trim surrounding the radio (use a plastic trim removal tool to avoid damage).
  3. Remove the radio (four torx screws at each corner on the standard radio).
  4. The centre fascia trim in which the radio is mounted must now be removed.  Four torx screws adjacent to the holes from the radio screws.  Two further torx screws in the depths of the radio “box” (ignore the different looking torx screw) plus two torx screws at the outer bottom left and right edges, at shin level, of this section of the fascia.  Once the screws are removed the trim can be pulled straight towards you, noting the run of the radio cabling.
  5. Once removed, on the left side of the resulting hole you will see an aperture which you can get your hand in to retrieve the plunger switch.  Mine had fallen down and could be easily seen when shining a bright torch down through the space where the top lidded glove box fits.
  6. The plunger switch fits onto a plastic bracket on the right side of the lower glove box.  It is actuated by the rectangular end of the right hand curved hinge arm.  Again this can be seen by looking downwards through the hole where the upper glove box fits.
  7. I found the plunger switch was a poor fit (it has two clips and a peg, but the clips did not hold it firmly).  I solved this by using a cable tie which I could pass between the mounting bracket and the glove box and tightening it around the fitted switch.  Check the light goes on and off when the glove box lid is opened and closed.  Note:  if you have had the glove box light on for several minutes it automatically shuts off to save draining the battery.  It will not come on again unless you close any open door(s) first, then close and open the glove box.
  8. Follow steps 4 to 1 to re-assemble, noting that the original radio will recognise it’s stored security code if the ignition is first switched on, followed by turning the radio on.

A pretty straightforward job, especially if you're flexible and double-jointed!

Very good. Cheers.

But how did you know it wasn't switching off? Abit like the fridge light isnt it haha.

Yes, I know what you mean, and I didn't have a secret spy!

I had noticed that the base of the upper lidded glove box was getting very warm when on a run.  Heat was coming up from the bulb below.

On closer inspection I could see that the light was staying on even when the lower glove box lid was just ajar.
