Cruise control light

Featured Replies

Hi all my cruise control won't enable when I switch it on and the light on the dash don't light up any ideas what this could be? I have tried cleaning the contacts in the stalk but still no joy.

Well that's the easy answer.  Did you use isopropol alcohol?  I have heard stories that the contacts can actually break.

I have inadvertently switched CC off with the little toggle on top - nothing so stupid I suppose?

I read you could use vodka so that's what I used lol the little toggle on the stalk is switched on but no light comes on. Just plugged vagcom in and tested the brake and clutch and they show as working but when I switch the little toggle to turn cruise control on it don't show as working. the only code I get is below.

I have a 56 reg. if I look at a certain angle on the dash I can see there is the cruise control symble but no light comes on.

I don't have my car with me till tomorrow so I'll check the sticker then.

I'll try proper electrical cleaner on the switch when I get the car back aswell.

If I got a new stalk if it is the stalk at fault would I need to code anything if it was fitted from the dealer?

I have cleared all the codes and the one shown above is the only one that has stayed in the memory after driving for a bit.

Are you saying that Cruise is working but no light is showing. Has it shown before? If cruise is not working at all, at this time of the year, if you have cleaned the contact board perhaps It could be condensation. Remove, dry, reinstall. Should take 5-10 mins.

Mine's a '56 plate and has the symbol illuminated - just press and there it is.

Been noticing it for most of today -  Southampton and back - just under 400 miles.

I have only just got the car and never seen the light but it don't work I can see on vagcom when I switch the switch on the stalk the value never changes but when pushing the clutch and brake pedal the value changes.

I did notice when the stalk was apart I put a multi meter on the "set" button to see if the button was working and there is always continuity weather the button is pushed in or not pushed in, but on the other button can't remember what that one is called but when the button is not pushed in there is no continuity and when the button is pushed in there is continuity. Could this be the problem do you think?

I have the 6Y0 option on my can so it don't have the warning light then. And I'm correct in saying I can't activate it unless I change my speedo cluster

Correct, needs a different cluster before the light will work. The LED and/or other components are not present on the main PCB even though the front face of the instruments has the place for the lamp. That does not stop cruise working though, it should still work even with no lamp.

I retrofitted maxidot to my old 55 reg Octy MK2. Before replacement the cruise light did nothing, but the brand new replacement cluster had a working light.

Ok so that sorts out the light lol now why ain't the cruise control engaging?

Driving down the motorway at about 65 switch the cruise control on via the stalk (toggle on top of stalk) push the set button on the stalk (the rocker switch on the end of the stalk) take foot off accelerator speed drops. Am I doing something wrong?

On a previous car (not VAG, but GM) the cruise would not kick in unless you had touched the brake pedal since starting the engine. Quite often caught me out when setting off from motorway services.

My MY12 Octy has a DSG box, so you can't get going without rouching the brake pedal -- I therefore don't know if this is applicable! Someone else will be along soon...

Tiered pushing the brake and seeing if I can set it still not working

Think it's a new stalk them thanks for the help guys just one last question how do I find out the part number for my stalk without taking the airbag and steering wheel off?

  • Author

Should be or will be lol don't wanna buy the wrong one!

CC disengages as soon as you touch the brake or clutch pedals.

Someone should know if this is down to a simple mechanical switch on the pedal or something involved with the canbus?

If plain switches, then could they be faulty or maladjusted?

Personally I would be tempted to pick up a used stalk from a breakers and simply swap the cruise switch over to your existing stalk. That would avoid taking the airbag and steering wheel off. Just remove the switch as you already have done to clean it and replace with the switch from the other stalk.

+1 for that, changing the switch is pretty trivial
