Retractable Luggage Cover

Featured Replies

Is it possible to re-tension the retractable luggage cover?

Mine doesn't retract as well as I think it once did. It's not broken damaged to the best of my knowledge

Thanks

Same here.

Looks like I might to get a new one.

I would love to fix it on my own - they are about £200 new!

I seem to remember they are sealed units. Have you guys tried cleaning the 2 runners, and adding a dab of silicone spray?

Mine is retracting slower in this colder weather.

Mine is a fairly new one and when you accelerate or go over a bump mine retracts on its own with a loud snap. Very annoying and frightened the life out of me the first time it happened. Anyone else have this trouble?

:D  I can imagine that would make you jump! Hasn't happened with mine though...

When you pull the cover closed, can you hear both sides engage? Possible a lock on one side is broken or not working fully.

Check whether the hooks that hold the luggage cover in place are okay. I had this happen once and it turned out to be the runner and hooks detaching from their mounts within the boot wall on one side. I was able to dismantle and reglue it easily enough and it's been perfect since I fixed it a few months ago. I used TEC7 silicone glue from B&Q, as it will deal with some flex in the parts it's attaching without the bond breaking. As far as I can work out this was caused by something heavy being put on top of the plastic ledge above the luggage cover runner, which damaged the bond between the runner and the ledge, gradually causing them the detach from each other.

Cleaning and greasing didn't fix it for me.

Cleaning and lubing with silicone has sorted it for me..

Brilliant. Could you give my dummy instructions?

As in what 'exactly' did you do?

Hi

I did the silicone spray thing and it is so much better now

Just like new :)

1) Took the luggage cover off

2) Got silcone spray (Motul Silicone Clean which is now called Shine and Go I think) and sprayed liberally onto clean rag

3) Inserted cloth into guide runners and moved up and down runners to clean and lube them

4) Sprayed silcone onto the luggage cover guides

5) Reattached luggage cover

6) Revelled in the smoothness!

I did something similar, which included only one step:

  1. Took my aerosol can of Teflon-spray from the garage and sprayed some in the luggage cover guides.

Problem solved.

Ah.

You see my cover has no tension in the actual sealed unit that slots in behind back seat headrests.

I don't think the silicone spray on runners and guides will help but I'll give it a try, thanks again.
