Dash is like a Christmas tree - HELP. ABS control module fault?

Featured Replies

Evening,

So I installed a new battery this morning. Ignition was off. Nothing untoward happened. Drove for about an hour and all was well.

Driving home the dash lit up like a Christmas tree.

Power steering light was yellow.

Abs light was yellow.

Traction control light was yellow.

Handbrake type symbol was flashing red.

I pulled over and as per the hand book checked the brake fluid. No problems there.

Started the car and got the same lights.

Also.

Speedo stopped working

Fuel guage going up and down.

Steering is also heavier.

Stopped at home after a couple mins driving. Turn off then on.

EML now on as well.

What the heck is going on? My friend is going to bring his VAG reader and after that I'll take it to a specialist.

In the mean time - anybody got any words of wisdom?!

Thanks

Try leaving the Neg off for about 10mins. Are you sure its all done up tight?

Give the terminal connections a clean

I'll have a look at the battery in the morning. I've no idea why I didn't check earlier.

I'll report back!

Did you check the function of the charging system before you fitted a battery?

I've disconnected the battery, reconnected (twice now) no change. There is a good crackle on reconnection so I'm confident a good current is flowing.

The car also starts on the button too.

I didn't check the charging circuit because the old battery was definitely knackered as indicated by my trickle charger.

I friend is coming round with a code reader and I'm about to double check the fuses but I'm out of ideas.

Anybody got any other suggestions?

Thanks

I had this after a flat battery at the weekend. I loaded VCDS and cleared all errors, then turned the steering all the way one way then the other a few times, it stayed lit up but then as soon as I started driving everything cleared. I think its the steering angle sensor holding it all lit up. it needs to datum itself.

where are you located find someone with vcds to do a scan

Got a p0600 fault code.

I'm off to do a little research and going to take it down to skoda.

Well it's in the skoda dealer so I'll see what they say when they ring up.

Thanks for the info.

Well ladies and gents,

Skoda called today and diagnosed the ABS control module. This is more of a common fault than I had realised.

So the bill is estimated at £820.

I have emailed Skoda UK to ask if there is anything that they suggest or whether they can offer any kind of financial assistance.

It's come at quite an interesting time for me. Me and the Mrs are in the process of selling both cars and buying a new one. I was trying to convince her that a new VRS petrol was the car for us (I really regret getting rid of my old VRS).

We'll see what happens!

Has anyone got any words of wisdom?!

Very strange indeed, I don´t believe just because you changed battery the ABS kaput.

Anyone with the vcds/vagcom should try to errase the error to see.

Can admin add to the topic abs module fault?

Skoda don't think the battery change is related. It drove fine for at least an hour.

The power steering light came on twice about a week before. I think that was the beginning of the problem.

Or rather abs control module fault?

Research suggests that this is a common fault. Honest john states as a negative: 'Suffers from ABS/ESP problem'

There is a ton of info online about this failure online on VAG cars. I was surprised as I have never heard of it.

Sadly a ticking time bomb that hangs over most of us :o I thought there was some sort of official VAG kit repair for it now making it about half the price? Could be wrong though.

You're correct, lots of detail here:

It might be a different ABS fault though, it's quite late for a G201 sensor fault (although by no means impossible) and the cost seems to be about halfway in between the full replacement and the repair kit fix.

The part is £471. I believe this to be the abs control module. I agree this seems to be on the cheap side;maybe VAG have reduced the price if it over the years?

If it is the control module and you are thinking of selling the car anyway, then I would be tempted to acquire one from a breakers and see if that will help sort things out more cheaply.

Ian I am inclined to agree, however I'd rather sell the car on with a clear conscience knowing that skoda had sorted it out 100%.

Have you driven the car, have you gone through any VCDS options? When I had my problem, even using VCDS i keps coming up with the same ABS module faliure and thought **** this is going to be expensive. But I couldn't shake the thought a new/flat battery would not cause this. I had the steering wheel, tyre pressure and ESP/ABS light up on the dash and they would not go out. I kept deleting the errors and kept full locking both ways, I tried to find our how to calibrate the steering angle sensor but the ross tech site was down so I played with VCDS a bit and it all went away after a short drive.

We have all been to main dealers and spent hundreds only to be told it did not fix the problem. Find someone with VCDS who knows how to install 'new' sensors and let them take a look. Id rather have £800 in my pocket than a shiny new module that didnt need replacing.

That being said it could be the problem, but I just dont see how a flat battery can cause this kind of failiure. It might however cause the ECU to lose its memory.

Possible causes of OBD code P0600

- ECM Harness

- ECM connectors

- Low battery voltage

- Faulty ECM
