What to do? Dpf or dmf advice please!

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Got abit of a dilemma on the go.

We've currently (self employed plumbers) have a 56 plate vw transporter with the 1.9pd 105bhp engine.

Its a brill van, very happy with it, but its got 90k miles on it now and its shuddering when the engines cold when you release the clutch. Its okay in summer but in winter its quite bad. I believe thats the DMF on its way out? A garage said it would be roughly £1,000 to put right?

The vans probably worth about £4500,5000 at a guess.

So theres that? Or a nearly new van. Obviously everything else would be better but the new one would have to have a 1.6cr wouldnt it. It would be kept long term.

Being plumbers, it primarily will do short trips around town.

Which do you recommend?

Dont realy want to pay for a DPF in a few years time?

Thoughts please?

Cheers (:

Keep the Transporter get the DMF done, then it's still worth more as it wouldn't out a buyer off, I'd keep it mate

Well we'd probably sell it in the summer. Nobody would know then hahaa

That's odd that it changes with weather, mine rattle like **** no matter what.

And the engine temp. Did yours stop rattling when it warmed up?

I guess its the oil viscosity?

Nope, rattled no matter what. Are they sure it's a DMF as those symptoms are very odd

Oh right. Hmm. Maybe its the clutch itself then?

Nobody's had a proper look. Just dropped in at a local garage n explained. N he said its a common thing n its the DMF.

Edit: got my P's and M's mixed up hsha.

I'd get it repaired mate, better the devil you know and all that. Most vans have been hammered within an inch of their lives where as you know for sure this one has ;)

A very nearly new one wouldnt have had chance to be though. Talking like, a pre registered or something thats lost a little bit of its initial depreciation.

It gets treated quite well actually haha.

You've not seen the treatment we give pre reg ones. ;) I'd not want a DPF of only local miles

If it is the DPF, get it removed and mapped out, few more HP and better fuel economy for £500 and never have to worry about it again :)

DMF on the current one though :(

N good plan for the new one. Would it fail future mots though? I know its just visual atm isnt it? But will the emissions test get stricter?

Conversations I've had with my uncle who owns Rushworths Autos is that it will stay visual for a long while at least as they would need to develop further testing equipment and training to implement any changes.

Good to know. Defo worth putting into the equation. Cheers (:

I know Skodas are well down the vag pecking order technology wise but as the 1.9 pd never had one on a Skoda.....are you sure its got a DPF?

If it's not got one I would change the DMF then get it mapped to spread the torque more evenly across the rev range if thats possible if its got one of the pd variants that are known to do high milages.

What he's saying is

Current van - DMF knackered, does he get a newer one which will have a DPF which may cause issues as well only local usage. Or just get dmf replaced on current

Thanks, I'll get my coat LOL.....

Maybe my post is unclear, sorry.

The 1.9pd has no DPF, but the DMF (i think) is on its way out.

Not fussed about extra power mate. It spends most its time tootling around town. I've driven vans with bigger engines before. 140bhp transit sports n that. But its all abit pointless. They still dont really handle and you cant chuck it around a corner anyway because the tools n fittings go everywhere. Hsha.

Just wondering if a 1.6cr is more trouble than its worth in the long run. A new van would be nice, even nicer if it could have a brand new 1.9pd in, but thats not gonna happen is it :(

£1k DMF is a lot of money to throw at a 56 plate van with 90k on the clock IMO.

Cheers Jack.
