Oil in intake air pipe

Featured Replies

The car has started leaking oil from the rigid plastic pipe that is pre the inter cooler. I thought this was a sign of the oil seals going in turbo.. Since removing the air pope from the filter the the housing I notice there is quite a bit of oil coming from the rocker cover breather into the intake pipe. Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this problem.

Any help is much appreciated.

Sorry people, I forgot to mention the car is a 2004 fabia 1.9 tdi

It's quite common for these to start seeping oil from the lower inter cooler join but they have been known to let go anywhere along the line, poor design from the factory. Unless it's leaving patches on the floor and/or leaking boost I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You could try replacing the o-ring seals on the couplers and using zip ties or self tapping screws to secure the joint. This usually works for most people.

They are quite heavy breathing engines and the crank case breather does seem to let through a lot of oil vapours which then cool and settle in the pipes once the engine is off and this is the oil your likely seeing as a leak. I know when I removed the lower IC hose to investigate a leak a almost ended up with a face full of oil that had settled down there.

Search for the 'elephant mod' on here which essentially vents the crank case to atmosphere, which I'm not a huge fan of but it prevents any oil vapours entering the intake system and clogging things up. A more professional and enviro friendly route would be to fix a catch can between the crank case breather and where it enters the intake.

Thanks for your reply.. It's the girlfriends car and didn't notice anything until she had come back from a long drive to find oil up the inner arch along the sills and splashed up boot. This is what initially made me think turbo seals.. The problem is the amount of oil getting through means it's weeping from what looks a relief valve on the top of the inlet manifold, again making me think oil was coming from turbo seals.. I only found the excessive oil in intake one I started taking apart air intake. The car is due an oil change so not sure if this would make any difference for some strange reason..

could be the valve in the rocker cover it has springs and diaphrams in there if I remember right research ccv valve

If the oil has been overfilled at any point this could cause increased pressure in the engine and it would escape via the easiest route which is usually the breather system.

Thanks for the responses.. The oil level is 2/3 where it should be on level. I have had a look regarding this valve but cannot seem to find anything on it.. Do you mean pcv valve. Just spoken to someone I know at skoda and he has kindly said bring the car in and they will look free of charge for me..:)). Although I would like to try and source the problem myself with the help of everyone on here..

I seem to be finding out more about this problem and read that cleaning the egr valve and remove the rocker cover and clean breather may make a difference and alleviate the oil leak problem as there is residue oil coming out the egr valve

The only way you will stop oil entering the air intake system is doing what I mentioned above with the elephant mod or a catch can of some sort. This will prevent the oil building up in the boost pipes and 'leaking out' which is what I think your problem is.

The reason the EGR valve gets clogged up is because the oil vapours from the crank case breather mix with the soot/ash from the exhaust fumes and together gunk everything up, which is why if you notice pre-EGR the pipes are fairly clean bar being a bit oily. It's definitely beneficial to clean out the EGR and inlet manifold don't get me wrong, but it won't fix your leak problem!

Ok thanks for that. Will give everything a clean tomorrow and see how it goes. Starting to feel a little relieved it's hopefully not the turbo on way out..:). After reading more about it I can prob see why there is a build up of oil in the pipes as my gf only uses it for short journeys and it never get driven on motorways much hence this oil not dispersing properly

Thanks for your advice Matt, I'm going to contact darkside developments in the morning and purchase the catch tank they do and get this fitted.. Hopefully if this stops the oil in the intake pipe then have found my problem and be relieved it's not the turbo..:)

  • 1 month later...

Having exactly the same issue. Let me know if it was the breather or the turbo. Cheers!
