1.6 MPI oil change with a suction pump?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Is it possible to change oil from 1.6 MPI engine with a suction pump? I'd rather change the oil myself if it's possible to use a suction pump.

The service manual says,

"Suction off engine oil with old oil collecting and suction equipment
  or
– Remove the noise insulation.
– Screw out the oil drain plug and collect the flowing out oil in a suitable vessel."

But picture of the BGU engine shows that there's a baffle between the dipstick guide and bottom of the oil pan. So it wouldn't be possible to change oil with a pump. At least not all. Or has someone tried it and managed to pump all the oil out?

I had a very vague feeling it couldn't be don but if that's what the book says it's worth a try----what I do with any "new" car which is likely to need my attention on a long tem basis,   is to vac it then remove the sump plug and see what comes out  --then make a judgement for next time -- my extremes run from SEAT Ibiza = 1/2 an egg cup full to a Renault Megane @approx. 1ltr

As Cheshire cat has posted.

My 1.8 tsi was as good as bone dry when the sump plug was pulled after sucking the contents out.

Next oil change I won't bother with the plug!

I have a boat that can only have the oil changed via suctioning the oil out. No problems at all. Along with several gensets at work that have done thousands of hours on this sort of oil change regime.

The key thing in my opinion is to never ever use an engine flush, regardless of extraction method or engine condition.

Its pointless in well looked after vehicles and can be catastrophic in poorly maintained ones.
