Your views on the 1.6 105 and the 1.2 105 engines

Featured Replies

Hi guys just wanted to know your thoughts on these different engines

Am I right in thinking that the 1.6 diesel is only £20 to tax but the 1.2 petrol is over £100

I have had petrol cars and diesel cars and I preferred the diesel more forgiving in my opinion however the petrol was smoother any advice and your views

What is it like on motorways is it relaxed at speed

I had a 1.6 in an Ibiza FR for 12 weeks.

Was a pokey little engine. Motorway cruising was pretty relaxed (for a small car) with the revs sitting about 2000-2100rpm at 70mph.

Try and find a dealer (or 2 if no dealer has both) that will give you an extended test drive in both to see which is best for you. What type of journeys you do and how many miles you do will help you decide which one to go for and make sure the test drive reflects this including taking passengers if that's appropriate.

This will be difficult the 1.2tsi is a cracker mated to dsg, diesel is not bad either. But for me the difference in fuel prices is very significant.

Also with what's going on in Europe (France) with regard to diesels anti green, and the increased price of engine manufacturing for diesels, I think oil burners will be priced off the road in the near future.

My next Skoda will be a VW Polo GTI 1800 dsg as the petrol engines that Skoda provide at the moment are pathetic.I know the 1.2 105 bhp is good in a fabia, I owned a elegance DSG in 2011. But if you want a performance car they can't provide unless you go big Octavia VRS diesel/petrol.

Thank you all for the replys I normally do around 10/15 miles a day to work and back

I just thought the 1.2 would be a little slow rather than the 1.6 and more things to go wrong.

Like I say the other thing that is pushing me towards the 1.6 is the higher mpg and the low tax. But like you say petrol seems to be the way forward and I think I need to test drive them both the last thing I want is to get a car then want something better or faster I did fancy the vrs but after hearing peoples problems I want a reliable car plus the insurance and mpg aren't as good

I recently bought the 1.2tsi and very very happy with it. Coming from a 1.2 corsa, the monte is so much quicker and the torque is great. I wouldn't think that the 1.6 diesel is quicker? The tsi runs very smooth and is nippy, i wanted a vrs as well but insurance was more and now that i've read some of the reviews i'm not sure if i want one anymore haha. Anyway, if i was to choose again i would still go for the 1.2tsi...

Well at the moment I have a 1.4 grande punto which hardly has any power and at motorway struggles to get to 70/80 and drinks fuel because it's at full power just wanted something a bit more relaxed thank you for your input how much is your tax on the car

I can get to 90+ on the motorway with ease and you can hardly hear the engine at 80-90 so the car doesn't struggle at all, i often go above 80 because the engine is quiet and i drift away thinking i'm doing 60-70 so it's easy to go above the speed limit. I think my revs are around 3000 at 85-90mph or close but i might be wrong. Tax is about £130 a year so not too bad but obviously more than the diesel

Also the mpg is very good on the motorway (for a 1.2 tsi petrol anyway) and i often get 45-50mpg if i am light with the accelerating.

That's great to know thank you how about reliability on the 1.2 engine with it having been tuned etc

I had a CR90 1.6 TDI -  this is NO longer a town/short journey car!!!

I now have a 1.2 86 TSI - result happiness.

That's great to know thank you how about reliability on the 1.2 engine with it having been tuned etc

I haven't had any problems so far, mine isn't tuned (re-mapped you mean or?) and hasn't got any mods but will be changing the air filter for a performance one in the future, so far so good with everything (apart from the steering to the left which every monte seems to have, make sure yours doesn't before you buy it).

1.2 tsi with DSG is pretty awesome, looking t specs you would not believe it, but had a roomster as courtesy car and it was very good.  amazing on fuel too, can't see the need for a diesel when the small petrols are getting so good.  I would deco get it with DSG too as it works very well.  A lot quieter than the VRS on the motorway which again seems weird

if you ever were wanting to modify the 1.6tdi can easily go to 145bhp with 310Nm, up to 200bhp with a turbo swop and supporting mods :)

Sorry I mean obviously skoda have added things to get the performance from a small engine that's why I was meaning is there more to go wrong but all you guys seem to be happy with it if I'm honest I would get manual rather than dsg

The 1.2 TSI 105 is slightly quicker than the 1.6 CR 105 anf I do 15 miles a day and get 40 mpg in mine. I had a Pug 207 110bhp diesel before my TSI and prefer this engine to the diesel for the type of mileage I do now. Road tax is £110 a year compared to £20 for the diesel but it's cheaper to buy and petrol is cheaper as well.

You'll not be left wanting with the TSI but it comes down to personal preference, I came from years of diesels but much prefer my TSI now.

The 1.2 is quicker than the 1.6. But the 1.6 has more torque so may be quicker in-gear and give an easier drive on the motorway.

10-15 miles a day is still quite a short journey for the 1.6. It's unlikely to reach full temperature especially in the winter.

If you also do some longer drives from week to week then it's fine. Otherwise go for the 1.2.

With cheaper fuel, a relatively small difference in fuel economy and short trips it's probably the better engine to go for.

Thank you I'm new to motoring so it's good to get everyone's different views I just have in my head the more mpg the better for me but I forget that in order to get the more mpg your paying more for the diesel like I say don't do much mileage through the week but from time to time the girlfriend drags me out on shopping trips so then the longer distance is there but from the sound of it the 1.2 petrol will do everything. When I do get one of these cars it's to get the most out of everything big boot 5 doors great styling and hopefully reliable to last a long time it's a future car that's why I wanted to know more about the different engines thank you guys I appreciate all your help

Why what's your opinion then

My 1.6tdi vs any 1.2tsi, track or drag strip, looser gives £500 to a charity of the winners choosing :)

Is your engine the same as the 1.6 fabia we are talking about what do you think about it seen as you have one

Personally I think it's a great engine once you learn to drive it, it has the characteristics of a petrol engine and loves to be reved. I know some people don't like the longer gear ratios, but it's just about learning to adapt your driving style. Around town I see 48-50mpg and 55-60 on a long run, plus when I want to play it goes like stink (has had a few tweeks but stock still goes well) and handles fantastically. Pick the kids up and settle back into an economical and capable engine.

How do you think the engine would suite me from the last posts the main thing for me is the mpg and also cheap tax I have had petrol and diesel before so I kind of have an idea
