Four wheel drive

Featured Replies

It appears that the 4wd system is not working (spinning front tyres no help from the rear) there is no warning light illuminated.

I would guess therefore there is some electrical malfunction failing to activate the system - which is going to be expensive!

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Welcome.

Sorry, but not enough detail provided.

What specification Yeti?

An EXACT description of the circumstances that you noticed this situation?

Ditto "Llanigraham".

Plus if your Yeti is 4WD there should be 3 buttons below your Air Con Controls.

1. Parking Sensors,2. Off Road, Off (usual highlighted yellow) and on mine last of the right is Anti-Skid same as 2. 3&4 are Blank.

Check there aren't any blown fuses, and don't forget fuses in door panel.

In Qld Aus. experiencing Cyclonic Rain Conditions, mine has never lost traction.

Hope this helps

Not all 4x4 Yetis have the off road button.

And not all Yetis are 4x4, you need to be sure yours actually has 4x4 first (easily checked by looking under the rear). Next check would be the Haldex controller fuse.

And there is also the possibility that the OP isn't "driving the system" correctly.

Many people sense the front wheels spinning and immediately ease off the throttle, thereby shutting the "system" down. To get it to work you have to keep the throttle where it is or even "plant" it (in a controlled manner!).

(There was exactly the same question on another Yeti forum this week, but the OP never came back to us with enough details to sensibly answer the question.)

I find the above advice from a seasoned 4x4 driver to be interesting and useful. On the two rare occasions when I needed 4x4, one in snow - with winter tyres) and the other on steep rough ground I did the instinctive backing off wondering where my 4 wheel drive had gone - even asking myself if it was working properly. I will know in future to "plant it" in a controlled manner and persist. I was on both occasions blaming myself and not the car.

I'll warn you now, the first couple of times it is difficult to do, because all the "training" you've had in the past has been to ease off and you have to overcome that natural instinct. Once you've done it a few times, and seen how it all "works" it will become much easier.

Have fun, but do it carefully.

I'm very fortunate, living on London, that we rarely have slippery conditions but, when we do, I always give the Octy a bit of wellie, just to check that it's still OK.

Wise words, as a previous series IIa landrover driver I didn't have to wait for a device to sense anything...it was mechanically locked...can feel a bit odd waiting for the haldex to wake up.

Thought I would also mention....could be wrong but I seem to remember reading on here that if the yeti is without battery power for a while (? How long) it can cause the Haldex to throw an error. However nothing shows on the dash.

I think other members have said that if the errors are cleared by a dealer or some kind of odb2 system it all starts working again.

Cheers

J

Sorry for the OT in the Yeti Section.

But some reading post #10 might think a Series IIa Land Rover had a simple All Wheel drive system that was there as and when it was required,

well it was, once you got around to selecting what you wanted to mechanically lock, and you did it.

4x4 on the tail gate also gives a clue. :giggle:

Fred

Quite some time ago, I posted a link to an autotrader ad for a Yeti that someone had quite obviously bought a 4x4 badge for and stuck on the tailgate. I think it was a 1.2 TSI. That's why I prefer to check for the truth between it's back legs ;)

And you had to stop to change anything

Still think fondly of my IIa. Can smile about the time the gear lever sheared off in my hand.... Smile *now* that is.

Hmmmmm.

Do you have your suspicious hat on?

Suspicious?

Of what?

So this person has now been on 2 forums posting the same question and then doesn't bother to actually come back and provide the information asked for.

Seriously, why do we bother?

Ahhhh. I see.

Why do any of you bother actually, if somebody is not right back with the answers to the questions you ask them?

&

is this the one section that never seems to say welcome to somebody posting for the first time?

Hardly surprising when someone gets the chance to look back at their post they might think, forget it, i am off.

Well I am here but have internet issues too, sorry.

Its a SE TDI CR 110 4x4 and it has a 4x4 badge on the rear and on the gear stick so it should be 4WD!

It does not have the off road button, just the esp off one, at the bottom of the centre console.

Have looked at all the fuses, there is only one listed with a Haldex tag (in car fuse panel) and that is just a 5 amp one.

I was driving on icy snow and I certainly had the front wheels spinning, I could see them out the door, the back were stationary.

Tries with the esp on and off.

It did go better backwards but I guess that was just better weight distribution for the FWD.

Does it have a full service history?

How many miles/kms has it done?

Was the previous owner into 4WD ing a lot?

Hullo.

Sorry to hear you are having probs.

I would do several things. All learned fro this site btw.

I would firstly look at the vin decoder on this site and see if your vin on the vehicle tallies with the spec.

A bit more faff and I would prob do later Is the build sticker....in the boot under the rear board/mat there is a tatty white paper sticker... Looks like a sales tag but it contains all of the build data for your yeti. I would then decode that using data from this forum (or on the web..it's the same for all vag vehicles)and see what that reveals. If it doesn't have one don't worry some folk peel them off as they don't look useful or even very permanent.

If not I would take a look under as someone suggested and see if it's got a rear drive.

The absence of an off road button is not an issue as it's an option on an SE.

Likewise the presence of gear knobs and badges is not concrete as you can pick em up for a few quid.

I would also take a look at the 'Haldex failure scare' thread on this site.

If that sounds like it could be the issue I would get the kit to query the fault codes (if you have an android tablet already the dongle is 6-8 quid on Amazon) or get a dealer or friendly person who already has the kit to do it for you. It's an easy fix too if you have the kit so I hear.

Hope you get it sorted.

Did you keep the accelerator at the same level or were you "blipping" the throttle?
